Welcome to the Kanakuk Family! 92 years ago a school superintendent named C.L. Ford had a dream for a remote camp in the Ozark Mountains where kids could “get away from it all” and grow “in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52) Since that dream began in 1926, 500,000 children from 50 states and 5 continents have found their way to Kanakuk, where God pours out His magnificent blessings like a festive picnic basket on the Fourth of July! We are so happy your family has decided to join us this summer. Our goal for Summer 2018 is that your child will:

Safety First

1

#

Kanakuk has pursued excellence in summer camping since 1926. That pursuit is most evident in our Kamper Safety Systems. This is priority #1. Year-round, full-time, industry-leading staff are dedicated to these safety areas.

HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS Managing Kamper Safety Our dedicated, year round staff of seasoned, certified professionals are focused on providing a healthy and positive environment for Kampers of all ages to grow and learn. From our unique high element triple safety connections, ASE Certified Mechanics, ServSafe food handlers, and more, we seek to maintain the highest standards in the camping industry.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS Lifelong Friendships We want to foster and develop positive relationships within a safe and accepting experience. Kampers will build friendships with cabin mates and counselors. Within their cabins they will learn teamwork and be part of Biblical resolution of differences.

HEALTHY KIDS

Health Services

Kanakuk Health Centers are staffed 24/7 with licensed medical personnel to care for the daily medical needs of our Kampers. In addition, key field staff receive first aid, CPR, and lifeguard training for emergency response. Local medical facilities are conveniently located within 10-60 minutes from all Kanakuk locations, including the Level 1 Trauma Center at Cox Hospital.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF Safety is #1

Our staff and leadership go through very stringent hiring practices including applications, interviews, reference checks and various background screenings in order to be qualified to work with minors. In addition, all Kanakuk field staff receive advanced safety and security training, and our facilities are routinely inspected by safety experts as we strive to manage a more safe and secure environment focused on Kamper safety 24 hours a day.

KANAKUK CHILD PROTECTION PLAN The nationally recognized Kanakuk Child Protection Plan (CPP) consists of four Protection Zones, four Abuser Remedies, six Abuse Management Fields, three Prevention Stages, and over 340 measurable Protection Elements. Your child will learn to recognize, resist, and report uncomfortable situations, a skill they can easily take with them to church, school, and extracurricular activities. The CPP was developed and implemented here at Kanakuk in conjunction with industry and national agencies. Kanakuk is training and equipping youth-serving organizations on this system, with the goal to train 1,000 summer camps in the next five years. For detailed information, and to see the Kamper training video, please visit: www.kanakuk.com/cpp

KANAKUK KAMPS WELCOME GUIDE

I’m Third Groups Kanakuk’s commitment to equipping next generation leaders extends beyond the summer through year-round discipleship programs included with Kamp tuition. A Kanakuk I’m Third Group is a Counselor/Kamper discipleship experience that begins in the summer cabin and continues weekly throughout the school year in the form of hour-long conference calls with your Kamper, their counselor, and their peers.

“Being part of an I’m Third Group has provided a Christian brotherhood who help hold me accountable in everyday life. After leaving Kamp I didn’t have friends at home who wanted to live the lifestyle that I want to, but being a part of an I’m Third Group has provided friends that I know are only a phone call away.” - Kobe, Kamper “Life is being fed to my daughter through God’s spoken word every week in her I’m Third Group! Her Kamp counselor facilitates the calls and my daughter can’t wait to be a part of her I’m Third Group every week—not only for the fellowship time, but also for the relationships she’s built.” - Mandy, Parent

These optional weekly groups incorporate a relationally-focused Bible study and encourage Kampers to participate in discussions about what it looks like to honor God in every part of their lives. To learn more about I’m Third Groups, visit ImThird.com

Frequently Asked Questions Can my Kamper bring their phone to Kamp?

Our staff and Kampers are not permitted to have their phones while at Kamp, and we ask that you help us enforce this by not sending your Kamper to Kanakuk with their phone. Should a Kamper be found to be in possession of their phone, it will be collected and stored in the Kamp office until the end of the term.

Can I send care packages to my Kamper?

Kampers love getting mail! We encourage you to write your Kamper, and even include a small gift from home. However, please help us keep Kamp safe and enjoyable for our Kampers and staff by remembering to not send any outside food, candy, gum, or drinks. Additionally, we ask that Nerf guns, water balloons, and all practical joke materials not be sent to Kamp.

For a list of Kamp addresses, please see page 11.

What books and media are we allowed to send with our Kamper?

We prefer that all books, magazines, and comic books are left at home. All iPods, cellular phones, digital music players, and electronic devices are not allowed at Kanakuk and should be left at home.

How should I send medications and supplements for my Kamper?

We ask that all medications and supplements are sent to Kamp in their original container and placed in a plastic bag with a completed medication card. This allows our Health Center staff to correctly administer all medications and supplements while your Kamper is with us.

Should I send spending money for my Kamper to use while at Kamp?

Spending money is not needed while your Kamper is with us as all merchandise purchases can be charged to your Kamper’s account.

I lost my Kamper’s luggage tags—where can I get more?

Luggage Tags and Medication cards are available for download at MyKanakuk.com should these become misplaced prior to your Kamper’s arrival at Kanakuk.

Does Kanakuk offer laundry services?

Laundry services are only available for 2 and 4-Week terms and are offered one time during each 2-Week term and three times during each 4-Week term. 1-Week terms do not have laundry options.

Can we bring our entire family to Closing Ceremonies?

Yes! Closing Ceremonies are an event for the entire family and are a great way to introduce others to the life-changing adventure of Kanakuk.
