Welcome

A warm welcome to everyone to the Autumn newsletter. The summer months are often a quieter time for the RC (UK). I’m sure that many of you have been on holiday and I hope you had a great time and have returned fully rejuvenated! However, not everyone has been relaxing. Myself and the other Trustees, our CEO and accountants have been busy preparing the annual statement for the Charity Commission. This year, it is much more detailed and contains not only a review of our annual financial situation, but also our achievements in the past year and plans going forward. All members will have received the report by email prior to our AGM which is taking place on Thursday 21 September at 14:00.

We are changing the format of the AGM this year. As part of this, I have produced a comprehensive President’s Report which contains summaries of all course activity and our finances, amongst other things. This will be made available on the RC (UK) website after the AGM. It makes interesting reading and I hope you will take the time to have a quick look, even if only to see where the money we receive goes! We’ve also made some exciting changes to our Scientific Symposium, which is happening on 17 November at the Birmingham National Motorcycle Museum. We’re pleased that the program is more varied this year and will have something interesting for everyone. We’ve ensured that the new schedule makes attending the Laerdal Lecture (Dr Dana Edelson) easier - and the earlier finish will help avoid queues when leaving! I close by saying a massive thank you to Dr David Gabbott who has finished his time as Honorary Treasurer. David has worked very hard behind the scenes, with our accountants, to ensure the financial security and probity of the Council. I’m only too aware of the hard work he has done and his time commitment to the RC (UK), all of which is on a voluntary basis. Clearly, we needed a replacement for David, and after inviting nominations the sole applicant we received was Professor Charles Deakin. Many of you will know of Charles from his resuscitation research work, in particular on defibrillators. What you may not know is that he is a Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist at the University Hospital of Southampton, Assistant Medical Director for South Central Ambulance Service and holds an Honorary Chair at the University of Southampton in Resuscitation and Prehospital Emergency Medicine – clearly a very busy man! We look forward to Charles being duly elected at the forthcoming AGM to the position Honorary Treasurer and Trustee for the RC (UK). See you all at the Symposium!! Dr Carl Gwinnutt President

Update from the CEO Autumn, the “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”, is always a busy period for most organisations, and this year for us it will be a period that is not only busy, but one which we hope will also bear many fruits. In addition to planning for our AGM and Scientific Symposium, we are in the process of finalising our new strategic plan, which will set the direction for our organisation for the years ahead. Ultimately, our purpose is to save lives through effective, appropriate resuscitation, spanning all age groups and health and care settings, and this runs through everything that we do. Our guidelines, quality standards, training courses and educational resources underpin our reputation as the expert organisation in all things resuscitation, and will continue to be central to who we are and what we do. The great work that our volunteer trainers do across the UK is critical to this, and constitutes the bedrock on which we build our ambitions for the future. Around 60,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals in the UK each year, but the chance of survival can be increased two-to-threefold by the immediate provision of bystander CPR. That’s why it’s imperative for us to ensure that we are able to equip not just professionals but as many people as possible with basic life-saving skills, in a community as well as hospital setting. Our award-winning game-in-a-film, Lifesaver, represents one way in which we aim to save more lives in settings where most cardiac arrests happen. This month we launched a new scenario together with a new virtual reality version of this. The new scenario involves and is aimed particularly at young people, and includes the use of an AED. Try it out, and help us spread the word with friends and family, and through social media. The original Lifesaver is currently being showcased by the Wellcome Trust in their Can Graphic Design Save Your Life? exhibition. Last year we trained 150,000 children and young people in CPR on Restart a Heart Day in partnership with the British Heart Foundation, The British Red Cross, St John Ambulance, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue and all the UK ambulance trusts. This year we are hoping to train even more, and make an even greater impression across national media. There’s still time for your local school or community centre to sign up! I’m also delighted to welcome Catherine Baldock as our new ReSPECT Manager, who will be working with us part-time over the next 12 months. Catherine is Head of Resuscitation, Clinical Skills and Simulation at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, and not only has she been the first to apply the ReSPECT process in practice across different healthcare settings, but she has been a tireless champion for the project by giving many talks on ReSPECT across England. She will once again be presenting on her experience of using ReSPECT at this year’s Health and Care Innovation EXPO alongside Dr Peter-Marc Fortune, where we will also be showcasing a new e-learning resource for health professionals which has been developed by a team led by Dr Caroline Stirling, with funding from Macmillan Cancer Support. We aim to make this app available on www.respectprocess.org.uk very soon. There is in fact a lot happening and a lot planned for ReSPECT in the coming months - see below for more information. Thank you all for your continued support. Please follow us on Twitter (@ResusCouncilUK) and Facebook (ResuscitationCouncilUK) if you don’t already. All the best, Federico Moscogiuri Chief Executive Officer

NEW Lifesaver VR and Lifesaver scenario

We are proud to announce the launch of the newest member of the Lifesaver family, Lifesaver VR! ReSPECT update

The ReSPECT project is gathering momentum, with the appointment of Catherine Baldock as ReSPECT Manager and the publication of a new e-learning app, as mentioned in the CEO’s update. We are also delighted at the increasing amount of interest in ReSPECT from across health and care. Since publishing our materials in February this year, we have had 266 sign-ups to our Implementation Network from across the UK and across health and care settings, including commissioners, providers and national organisations. We have also had 173 requests for an implementation pack, which includes a set of principles which we ask all prospective implementer sites to agree to before they begin using the ReSPECT process in practice, to ensure this is done consistently and in line with existing best practice. Since the last newsletter in June, five new sites have begun the process of implementing ReSPECT, bringing the total of active implementer sites to eight. This includes NHS Forth Valley in Scotland, where ReSPECT is getting a lot of interest and support at the national level. NHS England has also been very supportive of the project, and we will be working with them and other national NHS leads and stakeholders to ensure that ReSPECT is embedded in national guidance and initiatives and aligned with existing priorities, particularly around emergency care and support planning. Because each health and care community is different, we are not specifying which or how many organisations need to be involved in implementing ReSPECT in a particular geographical area, which may be large or small. We feel it is important, however, for there to be a project lead and an implementation network involving key stakeholders from primary and secondary care, as well as service user involvement, to deliver ReSPECT efficiently. An increasing amount of care is already

being provided through multidisciplinary networks, and there is a range of useful resources on what makes for effective networks, including this document from the Health Foundation. If you would like to consider implementing ReSPECT in your area, you can request an implementation pack by emailing [email protected]. We have also begun the process of creating an online community, or hub, for all those who are either using ReSPECT, interested in adopting ReSPECT or simply interested in wider issues around a person-centred approach to emergency care and support planning. This will be an interactive community where users will be able to share experiences, ask questions and learn from each other, as well as accessing key resources. We will also be developing a series of webinars over time. If you are interested in joining this community, which we hope to have ready before the end of the year, please join our Implementation Network. Finally, we are also planning a national face-to-face meeting in the new year: watch this space!
