CELEBRATING 15 YEARS AT THE FOREFRONT OF CHILD NUTRITION IN CANADA In 1992, editors at Canadian Living magazine recognized a need for student nutrition programs – to learn well, children need to eat well. Driven by the desire to have a positive impact on the lives of kids across Canada, they rose to the challenge and created BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING.
As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, we

This year, we launched our highly anticipated online resources – the Club and the Keys to Success quality standards initiative – to amazing response! OUR VISION EVERY CHILD IN CANADA ATTENDS SCHOOL WELL NOURISHED AND
READY TO LEARN
2006-2007 HIGHLIGHTS MOVING FORWARD As soon as the Club was launched, thousands of programs, parents and volunteers from across Canada joined this tremendous online community. It’s a cyber-clubhouse for sharing ideas and accessing the latest child nutrition research and resources. The Club also delivers Keys to Success – program standards and best practices in everything from food safety and staffing to menu planning and evaluation – assisting communities in the further development of their own child nutrition programming.
KEEPING SCORE BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING
released its first annual Report Card on Nutrition for School Children,
revealing that Canada’s kids score only a “C” in healthy eating. In our 2006 report, only 59% of kids are getting the daily servings of fruit and vegetables recommended in Canada’s Food Guide and 37% consume one or more servings of regular soft drinks per day. The Report Card helps parents learn about, and aim for, healthy eating habits and provides them with nutrition tips to ensure their kids get a great start to the school day.
GENERATING SUPPORT Fundraising activities included BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING’s first-ever gala event, an exotic Gourmet Safari to Morocco held in the fall of 2006. Guest “travellers” experienced the amazing culture and community of Morocco, sampled tantalizing foods and bid on exciting auction items to raise funds for child nutrition programs. We also benefited from thousands of donations from generous Canadians through programs at their workplace, while they were shopping and through community fundraising events held across Canada in support of school-based nutrition programs.
LEADING THE WAY BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING
hosted its 3rd Annual National Gathering in Ottawa. Child nutrition
professionals from across Canada shared the latest achievements, successes and challenges in child nutrition. The two-day event was highlighted by an amazing evening, Gathering on the Hill, attended by Members of Parliament, to raise awareness for the tremendous need for breakfast, lunch and snack programs for school-aged children throughout Canada.
MAKING AN IMPRESSION To advocate for support of a national nutrition program for kids, government relations efforts were undertaken on Parliament Hill. BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING hosted a What Grade Is Your Lunch? event attended by over one hundred Members of Parliament, who experienced first-hand what Canada’s kids are really eating for lunch and learned more about child nutrition and the important work done by the thousands of school-based programs throughout the country.

good that people and communities can accomplish together. A big THANK YOU to Canadian Living magazine for their vision and for taking the first step. It set us on a path that, 15 years later, sees BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING still at the forefront of the child nutrition movement, striding confidently toward many more milestones of future achievement.

FOUNDER
“As we mark 15 years in child nutrition, we pay tribute to our founders at Canadian Living magazine. Their remarkable vision started a national movement that continues to have an incredible impact on the lives of children each school day. We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support and for promoting the importance of child nutrition to families across the country. The influence they have had on kids and communities is making Canada a better place.” Martha O’Connor – Executive Director, BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING
MAJOR SPONSORS
“We are proud of our Growing Great Kids program, which supports BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING
and their vision to ensure kids get the nutrition they need to excel in school.
Each school day, healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks are served to kids across the province and make a positive impact on the way they learn and thrive in the classroom. Together, our employees, customers and suppliers work towards a common goal – nourishing kids and helping ensure a bright future.” Doug Brummer, Vice President, Corporate Development and Marketing – A&P Canada
Through our national partnership with Breakfast Clubs of Canada, thousands of children are served healthy meals and snacks thanks to the support of the following corporations:
In addition, the following Wal-Mart suppliers contributed to BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING: SAM’S CLUB, QTG Canada Inc. and Canada Bread Company Ltd.
“When people Go Bananas! at Wal-Mart, they help kids. Kids like me get healthy food in the morning so that we have energy to learn. I can listen better in class and I get better grades on my tests. We are all happier because we have eaten good foods, and that means our classroom is a better place. Thank you to Wal-Mart and everyone for caring!” Nathan – Public School Student, British Columbia
SPONSORS
“I am grateful to Canadian North for helping make sure we kids get the healthy foods we need to think. Because of them and our volunteer teachers, we start each morning in a healthy way and we go to class ready to concentrate on our work. It is important to have companies in our community that want to help. Without Canadian North, we would not be able to get the delicious and nutritious foods we need to grow and to learn the best we can.” Donna – High School Student, Nunavut
