What BIM means for your Practice? Professional BIM Management Seminars

WHAT are the BIM Seminars? A series of 5 seminars developed based on international standards, and align with the proposed direction outlined in the CIC Report 2013. It includes Q&A session and guest speakers.

WHY join the Seminars? To enhance professionals' knowledge and understanding on what BIM is and where it is headed. CPD hours will be awarded to HKIA’s members upon completion of the seminars. Minimum attendance is 80% of the 5 seminars for the issuance of Certificate of Attendance.

WHO should attend? The course is designed specially for those in managerial positions, and / or in senior management who aspire to lead the shape of the construction industry to a more efficient and sustainable way of working.

Session 1 A) The Benefits of BIM to a Project B) BIM A Typical Project Life Cycle Duration:

Topic Purpose:

This topic reviews the established benefits of BIM in relation to businesses and design/construction projects. Providing attendees with an overview of how a typical BIM project will develop. Attendees gain an understanding about the information that needs to be provided in order for the project to be successfully delivered. It also highlights the differences between traditional construction and BIM projects. Attendees are guided through the typical BIM project life cycle, demonstrating how key milestones match up to the typical BIM project life cycle, how the BIM model itself develops and how members of the project team will interface with the BIM data.

Topic Objectives:

This topic defines BIM and its context within the construction industry focusing on the HK market. It also reviews the perspectives on BIM held by stakeholders and team members. Upon completion of the course attendees will have gained an understanding of how a typical BIM project will develop, from initial brief through to operation and maintenance.

Session 2 A) How will BIM affect my job? B) Government BIM strategy and context Duration:

2 hours

Topic Purpose:

This topic explains how BIM differs from traditional projects. It provides an overview of the changes BIM will make to typical project roles. It outlines the Government’s current approach to the construction industry, particularly with regards to BIM and the environment.

Topic Objectives:

This topic shows how BIM will change 'the effort curve' and the process of collaboration within design and construction.

It introduces the current definitions of Building Information Modeling and outlines the current HK Government construction strategy, including an introduction of the BIS BIM report and BIMtaskgroup.org.

Session 3 A) Development of a Typical Project BIM B) BIM vs. Traditional - The differences explained Duration:

2 hours

Topic Purpose:

This course details the incremental phases of development that an average BIM project will pass through during its lifecycle. It will detail the incremental phases of development that an average BIM project will pass through during its lifecycle.

Topic Objectives:

This course specifies each project phase within BIM and its accompanying Level of Development (LOD). It also illustrates the anticipated progress of the model across these phases and highlights the differences between BIM and traditional projects in regards to workflow, processes, strategy and expected deliverables.

Session 4 A) How to Achieve a Clash Free Design B) Project Deliverables – What to ask for and why? Duration:

2 hour

Topic Purpose:

This Topic introduces concepts relating to clash-free design. It elaborates on how BIM helps to achieve a clash-free design and considers the issues. It provides project staff with an understanding of typical BIM deliverables and how they are used when delivering a project.

Topic Objectives:

This topic provides explanations and definitions of various clashes as well as how they are to be identified and removed. Increases an understanding of the typical deliverable items that are generally required by the Client, usually at the end of each phase within a BIM project.

Session 5 A) Delivering Energy Efficient & Sustainable Designs B) COBie and BIM Duration:

2 hours

Topic Purpose:

This topic reviews issues relating to energy efficiency and environmental impact, and how BIM can address these concerns. Outlines the Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) data format and its relation to the BIM process.

Topic Objectives:

This topic includes the principles of BIM energy analysis, the available software for this purpose and how it interacts with BIM. It also focuses on how BIM will change the way data is exchanged between project team members, particularly the Collaborative Platform and the move from paper-based formats to electronic spreadsheets.

Commencement of classes depends on enrollment. Applicants will be informed of timetable within one to two weeks before class starts. Photos, video or works of applicants (including activities in and outside classroom) may be used for teaching purpose and course promotion. Fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferrable unless the course is cancelled. To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong for employment or as dependants, who do not need prior approval before taking up part-time studies. It is the responsibility of individual applicants to make appropriate visa arrangements. Admission to a HKDI course/ workshop does not guarantee the issue of a student visa. Applicants may wish to note that part-time courses are generally not considered by the Immigration Department for visa purposes.
