Thanks! Dr. Brandon Park | March 6, 2016 How can we know God’s will for our lives? What is it that He is calling us to do? These are some of How can we know God’s will for our lives? What is it that He is calling us to do? These are some of the most asked questions Christians have today. When you think of the will of God, there are three categories: categories: 1. The ________________________ will of God. These are the things that God has ordained to happen in advance. It cannot be changed. to happen in advance. It cannot be changed. 2. The ________________________ will of God. This would be what God has told us in His word. His commands are the moral compass by which we are to steer our lives. word. His commands are the moral compass by which we are to steer our lives. 3. The ________________________ will of God. This is the area where we all sometimes struggle in asking God the question, “What do you want me to do in this specific area?” struggle in asking God the question, “What do you want me to do in this specific area?” Ephesians 5:15-17, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.” How to Determine Your Calling? The calling God has on your life is the intersection of three PROFITABILITY circles: Needs of the 1. P_________________: Ex. 31:3. What are you good World Around You at? Where do you feel God’s pleasure? Where are you proud of your work? What do your friends say you’re good at? Where have you been acknowledged and rewarded? “Failure” “Boredom” 2. P_________________: Ps. 37:4. What do you Your love? What do you daydream about? What Calling do you love learning about? What would you do if money weren’t an issue? PROFICIENCY PASSION 3. P_________________: 1 Tim. 5:8. Can you What you What You’re “Hobby” make a living doing this work? Is the market Good At love to do willing to pay for what you offer? All of these components are important. Each of them is necessary, but none of them is sufficient in itself. God has invested into you something called life. Is He getting the ___________ _____________ on His investment? The way we maximize your time on this earth is to be in the center of the will of God. There are four primary tools God has given us to find His will. When I meditate on the Word of God; and I listen to the wisdom of God; and I walk in the ways of God; and I possess the peace of God – I can know that I’m in the will of God.

1. When I __________________ on the __________ of God

The first and the most basic way God reveals His will is through His Word. Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Whenever you see these words in Scripture: “This is the will of God” – you can be sure that you’ve found His will. God’s ________________ will never contradict God’s ___________________. God’s will will never contradict God’s Word. It’s amazing to me the number of Christians who want to know God’s will for their life yet they never spend time in God’s Word. When we listen to the Word of God, we will walk in the will of God. If you’re having a hard time “hearing from God,” then spend some time “reading God.” There are so many times when we face specific situations but we don’t have specific Scriptures telling us what to do. So how does God use His Word? By helping you understand Biblical principles. There are these general precepts that will give you wisdom and discernment towards understanding God’s will for your life. Psalm 119:66, “Teach me knowledge and good judgment for I believe in your commands.” That means, “If I will understand your word and get your word into my heart – you will give me knowledge

and good judgment.” So the first thing we have to do when facing a decision is to ask, “Is there a principle or a precept for receiving God’s direction. So ask yourself: “Does God’s Word ____________ or ________________ what I’m thinking about doing?”

2. And I ____________ to the _______________ of God

One of the primary ways God reveals His wisdom is through godly counsel. Proverbs 11:14, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisors make victory sure.” One of the best ways to keep from getting out on the limb of a bad decision is before you make that decision you consult several wise godly counselors. Proverbs 15:22, “Plans fail for lack of counsel.” The number one way most people try to discern God’s will for our life is the most dangerous way to try to do it – through our _________________. Never ever make a decision if any of the following feelings are true about you… • Undeserved ____________ – If you do something as a knee-jerk reaction just because someone put you on a guilt-trip to do it, that’s probably not the will of God. • Unresolved ____________ – If you make up your mind that you’re going to do something because you’re angry at someone and you think that you’re exercising God’s righteous indignation when it’s really your own bitterness at work, you’re probably not in the will of God. • Unsettled ______________ – If you’re doing something because you’re worried, “If I don’t do it now, I’ll never have this opportunity again.” Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of a fool seems right to him but a wise man listens to advice.” Qualifications of People You Should Trust: 1.) Have they proven to be ________________ in the past? Do you believe that person can give you wise, honest, objective advice – regardless of what it might mean for them? 2.) Do they know all the ______________? Nobody can give you the best side of a decision until they know all sides of the issue. 3.) Are they completely __________________? That sort of goes back to the first question – they have been trustworthy and therefore they are objective. 4.) Are they where _________ want to be in your life or in a particular situation?

3. And I ___________ in the _________ of God

One of the reasons why God has given us the Holy Spirit is to guide us through the prompting and the inner workings of His spirit within us. 1 Cor. 2:12, “We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.” On the road towards discovering the will of God, He has provided two guardrails: ______________ and the _______________. Proverbs 16:9, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord directs His steps.” We must stay ___________________ to the inner promptings of the Holy Spirit. Get in the mainstream of what God is doing and let Him lead you to that perfect will. In Acts 16, Paul was on the move looking for a place to minister. Paul found that where God closed one door, He always opened another. Paul was rolling so that God could steer Him.

4. And I ______________ the _______________ of God

Colossians 3:15, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Ask yourself: “Is there a settled peace in my heart?” Why save this one for last? Because Peace is an ______________. It is possible that you can have peace in your heart that something is right and it’s not right. That’s why you have to go through these other steps. Isaiah 30:21, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, you will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’” When you’re walking in the will of God, there still may be an element of fear but you will also have this unbelievable peace that surpasses understanding that outweighs those fears! The will of God will never __________ you where the __________ of God will not keep you. Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” There are always two parts to knowing God’s will: Your part and God’s part. Your part is to trust. God’s part is to direct your paths. The will of God is not primarily a place or a destination. The will of God concerns you as a person. If you are the right you, you can follow those God-given desires and fulfill His will for your life. -
