What does it mean to be a Soroptimist?

What does it mean to be a Soroptimist? Yes, it means working with other members to strengthen local communities by improving conditions for women and girls. But as members of a global organization, we are each part of a movement that goes well beyond our local communities. In fact, it goes around the world throughout our 20 countries and territories. When clubs support our Federation with a Club Giving contribution of at least 10% of what they raise locally, it ensures we can increase the number of women and girls who benefit from our Dream Programs—at home and throughout the world. This is what it means to be a Soroptimist. Our vision is a world where all women and girls have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential and live their dreams. But to get there, we need the financial support of each of our clubs. And while those funds most certainly do come back to the clubs, the nature of our global volunteer organization is that we pool our resources in service to our mission. There should be no expectation for a dollar-for-dollar return. Rather, we feel proud that each dollar contributed through Club Giving helps a disadvantaged woman or underserved girl somewhere in SIA to reach her full potential and live her dream. As shown on the next page, the clubs in the 28 SIA regions received over $2 million directly from the federation to help women and girls in their communities over the last three years. Funds were awarded through the Live Your Dream: Education & Training Awards for Women, Dream It, Be It, Career Support for Girls, and Soroptimist Club Grants for Women & Girls. The $2 million+ disbursed to clubs is, on average, about 5% more than what is currently raised through Club Giving contributions. However, this figure only includes the direct costs of the awards and does not include the research, development and program support that also must be funded. Additionally, while Club Giving provides about one-third of funding for our global programs¸ nearly another one-third is covered by our investments—with the balance being met by individual gifts and Founders Pennies contributions. Our dream is to not rely on investments whatsoever, and fully meet this 29% gap by increasing contributions—rather than reducing programming. If every club in our Federation made at least a 10% Club Giving contribution, our dream would become reality. Be a part of the Soroptimist movement. Help women and girls beyond your local community. There are over 20 million disadvantaged women and underserved girls throughout our Federation just waiting for us to help them stay on the path to economic independence. That is what it means to be a Soroptimist.
