Data Strategy Guide for Executives A Five Opportunities Executive Overview

What is Your Data Strategy? Data has become one the highest profile assets within every organization. How we leverage this continual influx of data is critical as it relates to the future growth of our businesses. We all have experience dealing with data from an IT viewpoint, the challenge is now focused on leveraging that data from an executive business perspective. Strategy plans exist within every other aspect of your business, why not include a business strategy for your data?

“Businesses have so much data, and while they are connected to the data, it does not mean they are using their data correctly. Pulling multiple spreadsheets and disparate data sources together wastes time, and in turn, money. It does not have to be that way any longer.” Property of Five Opportunities LLC 724-313-OPPS (6777) www.fiveopportunities.com 2016

What is your Data Strategy? Data initiatives should be at the forefront of every executive’s radar and each individual should embrace the challenge of leading the data charge. Many times, a slight shift in our perspective is the catalyst for positive change and movement. Data has become one the highest profile assets, if not the most valuable element, in nearly every organization. What to do with this continual influx of data and how to leverage the data has become a high profile subject and a central point of discussion and emphasis. Whose problem is data anyways? Data never used to be anyone’s problem but the Information Technology team’s. IT provided the space for us to store our data and hopefully protected it in the event of failure, whether electronic or human. Each division or group within our organization generated their own data from their own individual and specific application. As time and technology moved forward, the overlapping of data across multiple groups and divisions became a requirement and a necessity to compete. Advances in software systems have consolidated some of our data, but more sources of data are appearing daily and there seems to be no clear end in sight. The Data Growth Boom Every organization from small to large is becoming part of the data growth boom. Everything is focused on and about the data. All infrastructure projects relate to the housing, accessing or manipulation of data. Communication’s primary focus is moving data faster and in larger chunks. Data generation is reaching the very most core of our daily lives, even our personal electronic devices, home appliances and vehicles are now a source of data generation. Everyone’s data is growing, both personal and corporate. Interconnected data has become a convenience that we expect at work and in our personal lives. We are disappointed when it is not available and ask why. The business executive should expect the same. Who should own the data initiative? Who should own data initiatives? The executive level, period. Executives are the individuals with the most to gain, and definitely the most to lose, when it comes to the growth of any organization. Understanding how to leverage your data to help move your business positively into the future will be a significant key to your success. Why is the data initiative the responsibility of the executive level? The executive has the most to gain and to lose Data is a resource that touches and affects the entire organization The executives are the only ones who truly care about “ALL” the data of the organization The executives are the only ones who can direct and affect the overall outcome Data impact spans the entire organization The success and failure of the organization ultimately lies solely on the executive’s shoulders Property of Five Opportunities LLC 724-313-OPPS (6777) www.fiveopportunities.com 2016

Business Saving time Saving money Making money

How we view our data now includes a more strategic business approach that demands insight from “ALL” our data to impact our organizations in a positive way, very differently than we have experienced in the past. This data perspective is forcing businesses to turn from a traditional passive data stance, to a very aggressive approach in order to drive significant savings of time and money, and to position that very data as a viable revenue stream to successfully vault them into the future. What can data do for you? Any kind of new project or initiative is ultimately tied to the following three benefits; saving time, saving money, and making money. Examine the core of your next project and you will find one or all of these points driving the decision.

Saving Time

Saving Money

Making Money Saving time, saving money and making money, should be the same focus when it comes to leveraging “data.” Take notice, we are not saying “your data,” because leveraging data from a business perspective has exceeded the confines of your internal data sets and expanded to whatever data set is required to make more informed and strategic decisions for your business. 7 Data Strategies for the Executive 1.) Data from a Business Perspective We all have years of experience dealing with data from an IT viewpoint, what we need to know is how to leverage our data from a business perspective. Center your efforts on leveraging your data to save time, save money and make money.

2.) Data as a Business Resource With data increasing, both theoretically (idea of data and its usefulness) and literally (more sources of data, and more apps generating data), there is a lot of untapped knowledge to garner from your data when leveraged as a true business source. Ask the question, “How can we leverage data to solve current problems or accomplish tasks and goals?”

3.) Uncovering Insight into data beyond current methods As our business grows and moves into the future, so should the methods we leverage to gain valuable insight from our data. We need to look beyond “the way we have always done it,” and examine new ways of identifying the value from our data. Focus question for management, “What combination of data sets would you like access to that would make you more effective at your job and impact our bottom line?”

4.) Connecting Data beyond your existing technology capabilities There are many new and exciting applications and technology that enables us to connect data in ways, which in the past, have been too expensive and time consuming to consider. Be very pointed in examining these cost effective solutions that are outside your current technology resources. Consider asking the question to your IT team, “I understand how we address data currently, but what other tools and resources are available outside our knowledge base that might help address our business challenges leveraging our data?”

5.) Gaining Business Value from data Once you begin to unlock and expose your data, the insight and value will naturally come rushing to the surface. The more insight you glean from your data, the more valuable the data will become to your business. Focus question, “Now that we have begun to identify and expose the insight within our data, how can we extend this value into the future direction of our business?”

6.) Saving Time, Saving Money, and Making Money with your data Any kind of new project or initiative is ultimately tied to the following three results; saving time, saving money, or making money. This should be the same thought process and goal when it comes to your data. Focus question, “What aspects of our business can we save time, save money, and make money leveraging our data?”

7.) Business Growth with the same or less resources leveraging data As you focus on saving time, saving money, and making money leveraging your data, the natural outcome will be reflected in business growth that maximizes your efforts leveraging the same or less resources. Target question, “Concentrating on our data, what areas of our business processes do we manually combine data or just outright do not have access, which is affecting our productivity?” Property of Five Opportunities LLC 724-313-OPPS (6777) www.fiveopportunities.com 2016
