What should I do if I suspect ransomware? Following the recent “What is Ransomware?” Technology Broadcast, the information below will empower you to help prevent ransomware attacks by identifying the common signs and symptoms. Ransomware attacks prevent or limit access to your computer or files, by locking the screen or by locking your files unless a ransom is paid.

Signs that someone is trying to attack your computer with ransomware:  

Emails from strange or unknown senders with an attachment included. Common attachments are Microsoft Office files ending in “m” such as .docm, .xlsm, .pptm, and others such as .hta files Phone calls from non-UPHS/PSOM employees requesting remote access to your computer.

What can I do if I suspect someone is trying to attack my computer with ransomware? If you suspect someone may be trying to attack your computer with ransomware:   

Do not open the suspicious email or download the attachments Do not grant access to your computer to anyone outside of the IS Service Desk and Client Services Group. Contact your local support provider to report the incident.

Symptoms of a ransomware attack on your computer:   

Blank or empty Microsoft Office files on your computer that ask you to enable or turn on macros Pop-ups or a locked screen asking you to pay a ransom to regain access to your computer or files Long, random file names and odd file types such as
