Representative Hockey - U18 Men

Hello Redlands Hockey I was lucky enough to be the manager for the U18 Boys Team at the latest State Championships in Toowoomba. A great time was had by all involved. I would recommend a stay at the Downlands College on your next tournament in Toowoomba. Not only is it breathtaking visually, the service from all staff was amazing. The meals were excellent and absolutely nothing was a problem. I even received a message from the housekeeping staff wishing everybody a safe trip home. The accommodation was more than anyone could ask for. Definitely give it a go. The boys all got to meet on the Saturday and enjoy a lunch together, followed be a training session at the College. A bit of time for all to get to know each other before turf training at Toowoomba fields. The first game was against Rockhampton. It was a hard and fast game that saw our boys defeated 14 – 0. This was probably where we saw the most injuries. The next game was against Toowoomba 2. Our boys put in a huge effort that saw us with a goal by Callum Jones. With a final score of 3 -1 against us, the boys walked away saying “we almost had them” Great attitude boys. Sunday night the team and parents enjoyed an evening out for dinner. Hello Harrys, did a brilliant job filling these boys’ stomachs. The service was great and staff were happy to help in anyway. Mondays games started with us up against Frazer Coast 2. Again, the boys tackled them hard. It was here we could see a bunch of strangers starting to play as a team. We “almost had them” again with a small loss of 3 – 1 to Frazer Coast 2. Goal scorer was Rhys Middleton. Our last game of the tournament was against Gympie at 7.15 at night. The cold night air was a definite challenge, especially for the Isa boys. This game saw the boys working well together but sadly the game went to Gympie with a final 8 – 0. We saw a few new game moves here. The players’ player for the trip was Isaac Nicholson. Great skill and a great young man. The Coaches Player went to Steven Milligan. This young man gave his all in each game. Steven shows passion on and off the field.

Representative Hockey - U18 Men cont.

Along with Steven and Isaac, we say thanks to David Crosato and Tome Systa. All four of these boys are soon to turn 18 years so will no longer be able to compete in this age bracket. Good luck boys. The boys may not have had the success they hoped for, but many friendships were made over these few days. To see how well they all bonded from the 1st day was great. Not a lot of goals scored, but a massive amount of fun and laughter was defiantly achieved. The thank you list is a long one, sorry. Hockey Qld – for providing lifechanging opportunities to our youth. Toowoomba Hockey Association - Out hosts - an amazing organisation. All the parents and families - for allowing your boys to join us. The support of those who came and cheered on the boys was invaluable. The Mount Isa parents for travelling such a long way to support our team. A trip of approximately 2200kms is a great effort. Our Goal keeper - Dylans parents, Connie and Bradly travelled from Warwick each day. Damian Lee – our umpire. Thank you for your support and making the long trip from Mount Isa. Redlands Committee, Alice Meadows and Bernie Systa – for all the organisation that it takes to bring something like this together so successfully. Alice, thank you for your guidance. Lastly, and most importantly, a huge thank you to Paul Sciberras and Heikki Systa. Without them I would have been lost. Paul and Heikki, I learnt so much from you both. I am sure that the boys gained so much from sharing this experience with you. And I know for a fact that we learnt a few little nuggets of information from the boys. Oh, and thank you to my very skilled laundry assistant, Paul, my husband. To finish on a high note. There were 5 hockey teams staying at Downlands College throughout the tournament. Redlands U18 Boys won the cleanest dorm award and were congratulated by administration, kitchen staff and most importantly housekeeping. So, in the words of one of our boys, “we may not have won the tournament, but we did win the cleanest dorm, Go Team”. Thank you to all involved. I am proud to say I was part of something so special. Cheers Kylie O’Shea

2014 and we are 7 years young and not only do we have an RDO employed we have now employed a part time administrator, Karen Merange to provide the link between our internal and external stakeholders. We also drew up a new 5 year strategic plan that takes us up to 2019, after successfully completing our first five year plan goals. We also submitted a grant application to Redland City Council, which we later won, for lighting at the fields, as you are aware we are still waiting for council to construct. Our field capacity increased from 2 fields to 3, which gave us more options during wet days. We successfully held 4 come and try and a number of development days in line with our sign on dates to encourage new hockey players to join us. We again ran 2 x Hook in2 Hockey sessions to kick off the season. These strategies worked well as we ended up with 30 teams of players in U7s, U9s, U11s, U14s, U18s, Men’s and women’s’. Bulimba hockey entered a team of under 9s which meant we had 6 teams in u9 and also in the U14s which was a follow on from the previous year. To run the season we had 57 volunteer coaches and another 51 umpires regularly umpiring each week. Our rep program was again very successful with lots of players representing Redlands at the State Championships. We sent 3 x U11 girls teams to the Southern Cross Carnival where Team#1 won their division; 1 x U11 boys team to the Coulter Shield Carnival; an U13 boys (who won Div 2 at the Coulter shield); an U13 girls team; an U15 Girls team; both a girls and a boys team in U18s, 2 women’s masters teams (Team 1 won Div 3) and a men’s masters team. Melanie Woosnam also won the Player of Div 3 at the women’s masters tournament and we had 5 ladies selected as shadows and players in the O35s, O40s, O45s and O60s Queensland teams. Peta Dunnett was also awarded her Senior Judge accreditation as a technical official. To prepare our U13s and U15s we also hosted a tri city carnival between Tweed Border, Warwick and Brisbane.
