U11 Girls Southern Cross Carnival The U11 Girls played their Southern Cross carnival on Sunday, 6 August at Downey Park. For many of the girls, this was their first ever carnival. Some had never even played full field before. It was a very early start to the day with them arriving at the fields at 7.15am to prepare for their first game.

The results were: Game 1 V Ipswich

0-1 loss

Game 2 V Warwick Game 3 V Toowoomba

0-2 loss 0-2 loss

Game 4 V Sunshine Coast

0-1 loss

Game 5 V Brisbane

0-1 loss

While some of the girls were very young and inexperienced, their enthusiasm and willingness to learn was nothing short of amazing. You could see them grow and improve with every game, so watch out this week back at RHA. They all had the opportunity to try different positions and some have discovered they love these new playing positions. We even had 2 goalies for the day with Ember and Angelina sharing the role.

Although they were very tired by the time they played Brisbane, the girls found something extra, keeping Brisbane out until 3 minutes before the full time hooter. The Brisbane team admitted it was their hardest game all day, which was very satisfying for us to hear, showing how much they had come together during the day.

We may not have scored any goals during the day, but it certainly wasn’t from a lack of trying. We were very unfortunate to miss several opportunities. Their defence was also amazing, keeping the scores very low against some strong competition. Other matches had some very high scores, so our girls should be very proud of how well they played and we very much look forward to seeing these girls having another go next year.

It was a fantastic day and the girls have made RHA proud, both on and off the field while still having the fun that RHA is renowned for.

Thanks to all the parents for your help with anything and everything on the day to help it run smoothly. Thank you also for your and your girls’ commitment and participation. A massive ‘Thank You’ to our wonderful Coach and Assistant Coach, Jade Davey and Emma Systa, who did a great job and I’m sure the girls really appreciated their efforts because it showed in their performance.

Lastly, ‘Thank You’ to our awesome umpire, Mikayla Hoekwater, who also had a great day out representing RHA.

U11 Boys Coulter Shield Carnival The Redlands U11 boys team had a fantastic day of hockey. They played with great energy and enthusiasm throughout the carnival. They played five games and were totally exhausted by the end of the day! Most of the players had the opportunity to play in different positions and got to learn key positional responsibilities such as marking in defence and supporting players with the ball. All the boys tried their hardest and displayed some awesome hockey skills throughout the day. Their understanding of the game improved with each new game, as most of the team had not played on a full field before.

The boys were very enthusiastic and willing to try new things and it was an absolute pleasure to watch them grow throughout the day.

The Redlands team was coached by Nic Thomas, who has had quite a few years experience as a player and more recently as a coach. While it was his first opportunity as a rep coach, he has a great passion for hockey and was very eager to pass on his expertise to the boys. Our assistant coach was Kim Curnow who also has had many years experience both as a player and a coach and she shared some valuable insight and experience with the boys. Both Nic and Kim did a wonderful job encouraging the boys and giving them very helpful feedback on their hockey skills. Our manager for the day was Bernadette Systa.

Our umpire was Dylan Papasian, who did a fantastic job for his first time representing Redlands in a state carnival. His confidence also grew throughout the day and his professional approach and positive persona were a great reflection of the Redlands Hockey Association.

Game 1 v Tweed Border (loss 4-0) The first game of the day saw Tweed come out firing and many were giants against our small team. Some of our boys were shell shocked by the intensity and overwhelmed by the full field. Game 2 v Maryborough (loss 5-0) Another very intense and tough game, but our boys fought hard and we saw a fantastic sky high save from our GK Riley. Game 3 v Toowoomba (draw 1-1) Finally a game that was well matched to our level and the boys were getting used to the full field and playing together as a team. We saw some fantastic breaks and some awesome attacking. Our first goal of the day was scored by Ilian. Game 4 v Warwick (loss 0-1) Another evenly matched game, which could have gone either way. However some disappointing decisions which did not go our way meant we went down 10. A great win for Warwick.

Game 5 v Ipswich (win 3-2) Another close match with some awesome breaks even though the boys were exhausted. Our goal scorers were Ilian 1 and Max 2.
