Dame Shirley Bassey visits the College in November 2016

Beyond Russia, the Richard Burton Company present their fourth season of NEW short plays; Richard Burton himself is remembered in the theatre that bears his name; legendary cabaret star Dillie Keene of Fascinating Aida makes her Royal Welsh debut and we present a glittering array of classical music talent in our International Artists and Lunchtime Concerts series. Following Acis & Galatea in 2014, our co-production with Mid Wales Opera of Handel’s Semele promises to be a season highlight. This is my 18th and final season (for the time being) as Head of Creative Programming at the Royal Welsh College. Over the last six years, it has been wonderful to observe our dynamic performance spaces becoming at first inhabited and now, much loved venues. I hope that you, our audience, continue to enjoy your visits to this very special place.

Russia’17 is an unprecedented, multi-artform collaboration between the great cultural institutions of Wales to mark the centenary of the Russian Revolutions with events, exhibitions and performances throughout 2017. The Royal Welsh College has worked alongside partners from the worlds of music, dance, theatre, opera, visual art, history, photography and film to take Welsh audiences on a yearlong cultural odyssey.

Looking back over a century of political transition and artistic breakthroughs, the season will enable audiences to immerse themselves in the great riches of Russian culture and new works inspired by the revolutionary period. The political events of 1917 had a long lasting and profound impact on culture and challenged perceptions of what art is. Russia’17 will also uncover the largely untold story of the revolutions’ impact on South Wales and frame the story of the Welsh radicals who forged links with the emerging Soviet Union and its leader, Lenin.

The season begins here at the Royal Welsh College with Moira Buffini’s new drama Dying For It and Twilight of The Tsars, a festival of chamber music, marking the centenary of the first Russian Revolution that overthrew the Romanov Monarchy in February 1917. The Russia’17 Season continues throughout the year; watch out for the R17 symbol in our programme and those of our partners in Cardiff and across Wales. For more details of the full season programme visit www.r17.wales (website launches in January).

There will be many other highlights to look forward to this year, none more so than the extensive Russia’17 Season in Wales marking the centenary of the Russian Revolution. Throughout 2017 the Royal Welsh College will present Russian music and drama productions by our student companies and visiting artists (see opposite page for more details).

DYING FOR IT by Moira Buffini Directed by David Bond “Nowadays only the dead may say what the living think.” It’s the 1920’s in The Soviet Union under the rule of Joseph Stalin. Seymon is a poor, unemployed, downtrodden man living in the corridor of an urban slum. But not for much longer, as he has decided to end his own life. As the news of Seymons’ decision to do away with his pitiful existence spreads, he quickly becomes the focus of many a comrade who each try to persuade him to die in the name of their worthy cause. CHEKHOV’S SHORTS Presented by European Arts Company This hugely entertaining collection of classic one-act farces by Anton Chekhov includes The Evils of Tobacco, The Dimwit, The Bear, Swan Song and The Proposal. This is Chekhov as you’ve never seen him before – funny! Originally performed in Russian vaudeville theatres, these bittersweet plays are Chekhov at his comic best before The Seagull got stuffed, Uncle Vanya fired blanks, The Three Sisters started moaning and The Cherry Orchard was ‘car-parked’. “Chekhov wasn’t all doom and gloom! Llŷr Williams: Beethoven Sonata SERIES

HANDEL: SEMELE

Mid Wales Opera & Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama co-production in association with the Academy of Ancient Music First performed during Lent 1744 at Covent Garden, Handel’s Semele originally appeared as an oratorio rather than an opera – and instantly caused a sensation. Bringing to life the tragic tale of Semele’s ill-fated love for Jupiter, the King of the Gods, it is a spectacular departure from Handel’s previous work. One of the jewels of baroque music, it contains the stunning tenor aria Where e’er you walk and Semele’s joyous Endless Pleasure Endless Love. Music G. F. Llŷr Williams continues the final year of his three year cycle of Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. During his first two sold-out seasons, his recitals quickly emerged as one of the key events in Cardiff’s cultural calendar.

Steinway International Piano Series: TAMARA STEFANOVICH

‘I try to mix past with present’, says Yugoslavborn pianist Tamara Stefanovich, dubbed the ‘dexterous wizard’ of the keyboard. Her recitals are built on extremes: the purity of Bach next to the flamboyance of Liszt; the deep-ingrained emotional depth of Rachmaninov next to the mercurial fantasy of Ligeti. Her fierce engagement with the music makes performances eagerly anticipated events amongst her followers. Her Cardiff recital combines the transcendent virtuosity of Rachmaninov with Ligeti’s Études – perhaps the most important piano music of the last thirty years. Tickets £15-£19 Dora Stoutzker Hall

Led by violinist Alina Ibragimova, the Chiaroscuro Quartet has been described as a ‘trailblazer’ – four virtuoso players, united by friendship and using historic techniques to make 18th and 19th century music spring vividly to life. Schubert’s mighty Death and the Maiden quartet, here performed on period instruments, is a fascinating contrast to the larger-scale orchestral version, arranged by Mahler, which will be performed by the Royal Welsh College String Soloists in January. A uniquely thrilling experience, this iconic work is put beautifully into stylistic context through juxtaposition with works by Bach and the younger Schubert. SCHUBERT ENSEMBLE

The Schubert Ensemble is one of the UK’s most respected chamber ensembles – and it has a special relationship with the Royal Welsh College. MOZART SERENADE Royal Welsh College Chamber Winds

Guest Director Gary Levinson Schubert’s Death and the Maiden occupies a magical place in the string repertoire – one of the greatest masterpieces by one of the greatest masters. This version, arranged by Mahler for string ensemble, contrasts beautifully with the more intimate original version for string quartet which you can hear performed by the Chiaroscuro Quartet on period instruments in February. The sudden dramatic shifts, violent outbursts, song-like melodic lines and exquisitely serene moments combine to create a work of transcendent beauty. THE SPIRIT OF 1917 Royal Welsh College Wind Orchestra Meyrick Alexander conductor As the Great War raged, composers continued to try and create beauty. Respighi’s Fountains of Rome is like a huge sunburst of colour and joy; Holst’s Suite weaves British folk songs into something fresh and new.
