Perth Airport – A vital role
Benefits of Perth Airport to Western Australia
Perth’s relative isolation and the vast distances between Australian population centres make air travel – and therefore Perth Airport – indispensable to both the people of Western Australia and the state’s economic, social and cultural development.
Connecting people
Perth Airport operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2017, we handled 14.3 million passengers, and 130,115 aircraft movements and expect that 241,000 aircraft movements and 35 million passengers will travel through Perth Airport by 2045. The airport facilitates international access to many global destinations as well as interstate domestic travel. We are a vital asset for regional communities and businesses including those in the resources industry. Perth Airport provides economic, social and cultural benefits to Western Australian’s by connecting people and communities. This not only strengthens cultural, family and social bonds, but also supports business, tourism and leisure travel.
Majority-owned by super funds
$1 billion investment undertaken
Perth Airport is located on approximately 2,105 hectares of land owned by the Commonwealth of Australia.
Since 2011, we have invested more than $1 billion to expand and improve airport facilities and airfield infrastructure resulting in Perth Airport being awarded: •• 2016 Skytrax World Airport Award – Best Airport Staff Service – Australia Pacific •• 2016 Australian Airports Association – Capital City Airport of the Year •• 2017 International Airport Review Winner – Passenger Experience •• 2017 International Airport Review Winner – Passenger Experience •• 2017 Centre for Aviation – Asia Pacific Airport of the Year – Medium Airport Category, 30 Million Passengers
In 1997, the airport was privatised under a long term lease with oversight remaining with the Commonwealth of Australia. Perth Airport is operated by Perth Airport Pty Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Perth Airport Development Group Pty Ltd (PADG). More than 50 per cent of PADG is owned by superannuation funds, including AustralianSuper and Sunsuper.
$2.5b estimated investment in the next 10 years to support forecast passenger growth
Perth Airport’s development supports freight transport services for companies, tourism, leisure and business travel, encouraging businesses growth through available transport and improving their customer service.
Due to the physical isolation of Perth and the size of Western Australia, Perth Airport plays a vital role in providing access to around 50 intrastate, interstate and international destinations connecting communities in regional Western Australia to the rest of Australia and the world. The State Aviation Strategy, published in 2015, recognises Perth Airport as: •• a key element in the movement network of the State, •• the international gateway to Perth and Western Australia, and •• the focal point for the growth of the tourism industry.
93% of visitors travelling to WA use air transport
Significant employer As a major centre of employment, Perth Airport employs (directly and indirectly) an estimated 12,570 aviation and 5,230 non-aviation related fulltime employees. Employment at Perth Airport is expected to grow to over 42,000 aviation and non-aviation related full-time employees by 2034.
Supporting tourism, business and the resource sector Air services are the lifeblood of Western Australia’s tourism industry: 93 per cent of visitors travelling to the state use air transport. As Australia’s Western hub, the aviation activities at Perth Airport promote spending from domestic and international tourists. The tourism industry is significant to the state of Western Australia. In 2013 it was estimated that the tourism enabled by Perth Airport generated 41,400 direct full-time employees, adding direct value to the Gross Regional Product of $3.68B per year. When direct and indirect value is considered this spending generates 59,800 full-time employee and adds $6.16B to Gross Regional Product.
