What this document is

The Caithness Windfarm Information Forum, a group based in the north of Scotland that opposed wind turbine development in the area, compiled one of the more extensive public lists of documented wind turbine accidents anywhere online. The version examined here covers incidents from the 1970s through November 1, 2006, and records 301 individual events, including 37 fatal accidents.

The compilation sorts accidents into categories such as blade failure, fire, structural failure and ice throw, and notes that reported incidents rose sharply after 1999, a change the authors attribute mainly to the growth of internet news coverage rather than to any change in turbine reliability. The group acknowledges gaps in the data, particularly for Denmark and the Netherlands, and describes its own total as likely only a partial picture.

CWIF stopped maintaining the site itself, and the Scotland Against Spin campaign group took over quarterly updates to the accident database, continuing to host the historical dataset alongside newer entries.
