Pillars of safety As we implement our Strive for L·I·F·E Next Step Change 5 Pillar Strategy throughout our Hong Kong operation and projects, we have various initiatives to enhance our overall approach towards the management of safety. Two such initiatives are the L·I·F·E safety application for mobile devices and the SMS Framework e-book. To be used by our frontline engineering and supervisory staff, the safety application is designed to help cut down the amount of paperwork and documentation required on site. It also provides simplified and improved access to our key safety management systems, reference documentation and method

To this end, our Indonesia operation recently rolled out waste and hydrocarbon management training at the Wahana and Mahakam Sumber Jaya coal mines. About 40 people from each of the sites participated in four hours of environmental training, which were conducted in-house by Manager Environmental Wisnu Sugesti. This important initiative paves the way for standardised environmental training to be implemented at all our projects in Indonesia.

Reporting our sustainability At Leighton, we define sustainability as “the way in which we do business that is consistent with our vision and values”. This approach to sustainability embraces a broader concept of fostering the company’s long-term economic, social and environmental wellbeing through our values-based management. From challenging mining projects in Mongolia, Indonesia and the Philippines to tunnelling in Hong Kong, India and Singapore, offshore work in the Middle East and more, our diverse operations adopt effective environmental and governance practices that reflect our commitment to sustainability. We are taking our sustainability strategy forward this year by measuring, monitoring and reporting our greenhouse gas emissions and waste management in an internationally recognised format across our business. In our sustainability report for 2011, we measure our use of diesel, petrol, liquefied petroleum gas, ammonium nitrate-fuel oil and emulsions as well as electricity consumption. Hot and humid weather year round in Indonesia means we need to keep the air conditioning on in our vehicles when we drive. While this is comfortable and convenient, we need to regularly and properly maintain the air conditioning systems to ensure they operate efficiently and reliably. We are conducting this with the help of the CLIMA-9000 P BUS, a completely automated air conditioning service station designed for buses, earth-moving equipment and other large vehicles. The device is used to recycle our air conditioning systems during scheduled maintenance every 2,000 hours of service. This involves removing, filtering and recycling the refrigerant, which

Fitted into a purpose-designed and built portable container that was powered by a single diesel generator, the sophisticated simulators were used to equip inexperienced members of the local community with the basic skills and knowledge to operate heavy equipment without the need for actual machines. It is estimated that eliminating the need to operate four pieces of heavy equipment cuts our carbon dioxide emissions by more than 84%, or 107.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, over a one-year period with fuel savings of over US$50,000. With the successful trial, we are looking to establish training simulator centres at our major mining projects in Indonesia. The PDCA cycle should be constantly repeated for continuous improvement. Implementing an environmental management system based on ISO 14001:2004 can also result in savings, such as from lower waste management costs and reduced energy and materials consumption, by helping us to identify and control our environmental impact and improve our performance. To address occupational health and safety issues, we are applying OHSAS 18001:2007 requirements to our business as we strive to eliminate all Class 1 incidents at our sites.

business by helping to ensure our clients get consistently good quality products and services. This can be achieved with the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle, a four-step model for implementing change.

Working women In India, a Women’s Empowerment Vocational Training Centre set up by the team building the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel in the state of Jammu and Kashmir has proved very popular since opening on 16 April. Designed to equip women from the local community with the skills needed to take up employment, build careers or start businesses, the centre received an overwhelming response to its first course. A total of 35 women joined the six-month course, which focused on developing tailoring skills.

Talent management We are always looking for opportunities to develop homegrown talent and, in Mongolia, we offer scholarships to promising engineering students as part of our Young Talent Management programme. This year, we awarded scholarships to six students studying mining, civil and mechanical engineering as well as renewable energy at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology and the Mongolian State University of Agriculture. The scholarship includes tuition and textbook costs, the cost of living in a dormitory for out-of-town students, course fees to learn English and a three-week internship with our Mongolia operation. To date, we have awarded 26 scholarships. To give some insight to the six students about what they can expect as they switch from a classroom to a working environment, we invited some former scholarship recipients who are now working for us to share their experiences. A fun day of team games and activities was also organised to give the students a chance to interact with our staff and learn about our corporate culture and values. Held at the Mongolian Football Federation gym on 19 May, the sports day had everyone divided into four teams and competing in various games, including tug-of-war, relays races and other activities.

Paddle power There was a great team spirit and sense of camaraderie and competition as enthusiastic paddlers from our Hong Kong projects and offices put on a thrilling performance at the Sun Life Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships on 23 June. Competing in the Mixed Division and Men’s Division B categories, our paddlers showed off the results of 10 Sundays of intense training before cheering crowds at Stanley Main Beach. Up against strong competition, Leighton Team B finished the 270-metre long race in fourth place in the Men’s Division B Plate Final with a time of over 1 minute and 24 seconds. Leighton Team A clinched the fifth prize in the Mixed Bronze Cup B Final in under 1 minute and 21 seconds. This popular event is held every year in Hong Kong to celebrate the Chinese festival of Tuen Ng.

Healthy at work As our operations expand and our volume of work grows, employee health becomes increasingly important to the success of our business. This is because healthy employees are generally happier, more motivated and productive at work as well as at home. As part of our efforts to promote the welfare and wellbeing of our workforce, we joined the [email protected] Pilot Project last year as one of 19 participating companies in Hong Kong. Launched by the Department of Health’s Central Health Education Unit, the pilot project aims to encourage employers and employees to adopt a healthier lifestyle at work. Throughout last year, we conducted various activities for staff at our Sun Hung Kai Centre office, including seminars about healthy eating and understanding nutrition labels, exercise classes, monthly fresh fruit days and health checks. We also set up a wellness committee. Our participation and efforts were acknowledged at a recognition ceremony and sharing forum on 18 May. The first phase of the pilot project took place from September 2010 to December 2011 and the second phase will kick off later this year. With positive feedback from staff, we now have daily fresh fruit days and recently unveiled a new rest area at our office in Sun Hung Kai Centre, where staff can relax, recuperate and enjoy a healthy beverage.

Learning across cultures For our staff, one of the many highlights of being part of a leading international contractor in the Asia region is having the chance to interact with people from different parts of the world. To encourage a team environment where people with different backgrounds are understood and appreciated, we started a series of country-themed cultural events at our Mongolia office in August 2011. So far, we have held cultural events celebrating Mongolia, Australia, the Philippines, South Korea, Malaysia, Ireland, the US and New Zealand. Everyone comes together for these lively gatherings, with staff getting to learn about a different country and culture each time through informative presentations, interactive games, performances, traditional cuisine and other fun activities. At the Philippines presentation, for example, the national anthem was performed while a football challenge was played at the Ireland event. For Australia’s gathering, everybody got to try on the iconic cap used by the country’s lifeguards whereas our Mongolian presenters wore their brightly coloured traditional
