THE JULIA CREAM 80TH BIRTHDAY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)

An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after two incidents of interference. In the first incident, just inside the final furlong, the winner, HE’S OUR STAR (IRE), ridden by Tom Marquand, interfered with BOMBSHELL BAY, placed second, ridden by Sean Levey. The interference was considered to be accidental as HE’S OUR STAR (IRE) lugged quickly left-handed away from the whip before being corrected by Marquand, giving BOMBSHELL BAY a bump. In the second incident, on the run to the line, HE’S OUR STAR (IRE) again interfered with BOMBSHELL BAY, which in turn interfered with HATEYA (IRE), placed third, ridden by Adam Kirby. The Stewards considered that the interference had improved HE’S OUR STAR (IRE)’s placing as BOMBSHELL BAY had suffered two significant pieces of interference, the second of these being on the run to the line, and there was only a head between the two horses at the line. The placings were revised as follows: BOMBSHELL BAY, first, HE'S OUR STAR (IRE), second. Marquand was suspended for 3 days for careless riding as he had allowed his horse to drift lefthanded away from the whip without sufficient correction, when HE’S OUR STAR (IRE) had already shown

a tendency to do so, causing significant interference to BOMBSHELL BAY. Approximately 2 furlongs out, MABO, placed fifth, edged left-handed giving POWERFUL SOCIETY (IRE), unplaced, a bump, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved, and it had not improved the place of MABO. Following the race, Fran Berry reported that MY BOY SEPOY, unplaced, was denied a clear run on the run to the line, and George Downing reported that MACHO MOVER (IRE), unplaced, hung left-handed under pressure.
