Just what was needed, a barrowman to be in the Dumbiedykes again. His name is John and he will be making sure that our little community is kept spick and span. John is part of the South Side Task Force Team. They are the unsung heroes of the Council . If you see John just say hello and tell him how much he is appreciated. High Rise tenant

VERMIN ON THE ESTATE Having lived in the Dumbiedykes community for a long number of years, I have noticed an ever increasing amount of mice roaming the area and finding their way into peoples homes causing myself and others to be constantly at war with a problem not of our own making... I have at my own expense been continually trying to keep these rodents at bay. I am a pensioner and have very limited finances...what worries me the most is that. young people as well as old are put in a state of fear and alarm wrongly thinking they are in some way to blame. Low-rise resident Newsletter Group Having submitted the letter above to this edition of our newsletter we feel it is an issue that should be addressed as soon as possible. As this letter was sent to us just before publication we cannot get an answer as yet for the person or persons concerned. However there is no way that we will not be getting in touch with the people who can take action about this awful situation, and hopefully get the action that is necessary.

'DUMBIEDYKES CHILDREN' JOKES, POEMS AND RIDDLES

Do you know the first people in the UK to have double glazing were the Scots?...It was so their bairns couldn't hear the ice cream vans. Fiona Campbell Aged 9 Picture handed in by Mandy Bowers aged 10

Lady sits down on a train. Man sitting next to her turns to her and says, “Lady, that is the ugliest baby I have ever seen. That baby looks in a mirror, it’s going to shatter. You ought to put a bag on that baby’s head. That baby is just ugly.” The woman, horrified, stands up and shouts for the conductor. “Conductor, this man has insulted me.” “I’m so sorry, ma’am,” the conductor replies. “What he did is totally unacceptable on this train. I will deal with him later, but for now, please come with me. We’ll give you a nice seat in the first-class carriage — and a banana for your monkey.” George Watson Aged 11

DUMBIEDYKES COMMUNITY NEWSFLYER Winter 2015 Sad day when the 'Engine Shed' closes Sad news for the community to learn that such a worthwhile enterprise as the Engine Shed is closing due to lack of funding. Set up in the late 80’s the café and bakery were created to develop skills in people with learning difficulties in a working environment. They took an old derelict building that was once part of St. Leonard’s Coal Yard and turned it into a beautiful dining experience. The food and service were of an excellent standard that could rival any commercial restaurant and a regular clientele were proof of that. The Engine Shed will be closing in March. Places like this, which give purpose to so many people should be nurtured but in todays world money and profit take priority. All the best to everyone connected to the Engine Shed and a huge 'THANK YOU'

'Shared Repair Service'  Debbie has given a very useful bit of information to the newsletter group to inform our readers about the lighting in the Dumbiedykes area.  The phone number for stair lighting, as owners may not be aware of is that they can call repairs direct 0131 2002345 and advise it is a stair lighting repair they wish to report and also provide the flat number where the light is out, that way if they come during the day they know exactly which one it is. With the dark nights it has been noticed there are a few stair lights out.

SKELF Bike Skills Park Building a bike skills park in the heart of Edinburgh…..Angus Calder

The trails would provide: * Somewhere for people to get outdoors, have fun on bikes (and get fit…) without having to own a car, trek to all the way to Peebles or worry about getting run over by a bus… * Somewhere local schools can run cycling and PE classes without the cost & hassle of a special trip (so they can happen much more often)

On the other hand if there is a problem with the street lighting this should be reported to Clarence 0800232323… Please take a note of the lamppost number and provide this when you call.

* A focus of positive activity for local young people

If anyone would like more information when looking to carry out communal repairs please contact the websites below and this will assist owners when looking to carry out communal repairs and direct them to the correct information

We also want to build a pump track (a small but intense circuit of rolling bumps, table-top jumps, and bermed corners) up near the Crags. Pump tracks are great for developing skills and improving technique but more importantly are super, super fun!

If you’ve been into the woods you’ll know they’re a bit of a state… they might look nice from the outside, but go in and you’ll find rough sleepers, underage drinking and used dirty needles scattered about all over the place…

Shared Repairs Service – 0131529 6778 www.edinburgh.gov.uk/sharedrepairs

We want to build a fairly gentle MTB trail threaded through the woods (mostly for beginners).

We want to clear out the rubbish, plant loads of new trees, and build something great so loads of people (especially young people) bring life back into the woods. We are a locally-based community group (and registered charity) with a mix of local people, cyclists, and local community workers etc).

'SERENITY CAFÉ' 8 Jackson’s Entry Please come along you will be made most welcome

We’ve made pretty good progress over the last two years including: * Preparing layout plans, construction costs and a maintenance plan * Securing 75% of project funding (so far), including £76k from the Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund, £26k from NEP, and more than £10k in ‘in-kind’ support from local businesses. Next step is raising that last 25 %, with a bit of luck, we’ll start building early next summer!

Comas 20 ‘More comes to Dumbiedykes’ The community organisation behind the Serenity Café has secured funding to develop a new project to help Dumbiedykes residents. The project aims to help people to become financially better off by £20 a week, regardless of whether they are retired, unemployed, working or students. Comas hopes that this will help reduce the stress of household bills and help everyone to enjoy life a bit more, perhaps by saving for things they really need, or being able to afford things they have to put off just now. Staff from the project will be introducing themselves on our doorsteps, using a very personalised approach. But they will also be developing groups for local residents to come together and share ideas about what the area needs and what we need as residents. If you would like to get involved, you can email [email protected] Activities the project is interested in developing include benefits and debt advice, developing local micro-businesses, shared utilities and broadband schemes, bulk-buying clubs – but your ideas are very welcome.

The project is also interested in training local volunteers who may progress into paid work with the project if funding allows.

CANONGATE Be / Belong / Become YOUTH’S OLD SCHOOL CAFE WINS THE PEOPLE’S MILLIONS TV VOTE! Canongate Youth’s Old School Cafe has won the battle for the public vote and £38,000 of lottery funding in STV’s The People’s Millions TV competition. The cafe will train unemployed young people whilst providing a much needed welcoming and affordable space for the community. The renovation work was started January 2015 and the cafe will open on the 1st April. Debbie Ure the project’s Employability Team Leader states: There has been a lot of public support for the project. Winning the People’s Millions will allow us to refurbish 2 kitchens and make the cafe a really nice space that values its customers. One of the kitchens will be used specifically to train unemployed young people, and the other will serve as our cafe area. I would like to thank everyone who supported us and invite them to The Old School cafe this year from the 1st April. There is a lovely group of ladies who share their love for crotchet, knitting and needlework at the Serenity on a Tuesday from10:30 am till 12:30 at the Serenity. Jane ( in the centre) is a treasure who gives every support to anyone feeling a bit apprehensive as regards dressmaking instructions. Please give this group a visit I’m sure you will enjoy it.
