Welcome to the latest edition of the Fishing & Living newsletter! Bringing you recent news of Fishing & Living’s international work in sustainable fisheries, including news from the on-going Fair Trade program for Handline fishery in Indonesia, updates from the Vietnam Fishery Improvement Program and new fisheries entering the MSC certification process.

Indonesia Safety at Sea Training for Fair Trade Fishermen in Pulau Bisa On October 1st, MDPI under the USAID Indonesian Sustainable Ecosystems Advanced (SEA) Project (USAID SEA Project) conducted Safety at Sea & First Aid Training for Fair Trade fishermen in Pulau Bisa (North Maluku Province). The training was held to comply with one of the Fair Trade certification compliance criteria related to ‘Occupational Health & Safety Standard’ section of the Capture Fisheries Standard. Future activities will also include training in fish handling best practices and improvement in port-side data collection.

Local fisheries management committee meeting to discuss the management of FADs The Nusa Tengarra Timur fisheries management committee made suggestions on appropriate management approaches for FADs that include: proposed restrictions on the use of FADs; closure of some spawning areas; the management of the number of days of fishing operations and limiting the number of operating vessels. In addition, a simulation was conducted on how to fill in the FAD registration, in preparation of the FAD Amnesty in Indonesia.

Beach clean-up activities were organized accros 5 sites with a total of 335 participants ranging from kids to adults.

Newsletter #11 Fishing & Living attends national anti-IUU meeting in Da Nang On December 15, 2017, F&L attended national meeting to agree on measures in relation to EU's IUU yellow card in Da Nang. This meeting consisted in discussing the most pressing issues that need to solved in order to avoid Vietnam facing a total ban from EU imports. New traceability and enforcement measures will be implemented in the next few months.

Fishing & Living Vietnam attends USAID capacity building meeting to combat IUU fishing This meeting was organized by the USAID OCEANS project that aims to combat IUU fishing in the South East Asian region. More specifically, this meeting was organized in preparation of the upcoming enforcement date (January 1st, 2018) for the Seafood Importing Monitoring Program in order to ensure that Vietnamese seafood importers to the United States are compliant with the data requirements. Fishing & Living participated in order to support its suppliers in Vietnam.

WCPFC adopts new tropical measure at its 14th annual session WCPFC 14th regular session adopted a new tropical tuna measure, which increased bigeye tuna catch limits, established an intersessional working group to develop a unified shark measure for adoption in 2018, directed their Scientific Committee to consider options for expanding the sea turtle measure to include all pelagic longline fisheries and adopted a replacement seabird bycatch measure.
