Wishbone the Beagle was born on a very special day in a very special year.

He was a roly poly little guy with freckles on his feet and a perfect little wishbone shape across his nose.

The very first thing wishbone loved to do when he learned to walk was to carry things around in his mouth: socks, toys, shoes, Wishbone would try with all his little puppy heart to pick them up and run thru the kennel.

One day the Marshall family came to see all the puppies. Sammi Marshall wanted a forever friend and sat on the floor trying to pick just the right Beagle..

Wishbone ran over to Sammi, grabbed her hat and brought it over to her.

Sammi laughed. “Look Mom; I think this one likes me.“ “His name is Wishbone,“ the kennel owner told her.

“ Well, I think Wishbone is ours “ said Sammi .

Wishbone loved Sammi so much and tried to behave. But there was one thing he couldn’t stop doing. “Mom, Wishbone has my sock again. BAD DOG!” Sammi yelled

“ Don’t yell at your puppy, Sammi”, Mom told her. “Besides, he always brings it back to whoever it belongs to.”

“That is kind of funny”. How do you think Wishbone does that, Sammi wondered?

Sammi decided to test Wishbone. She gave him one of her daddy’s shoes. “Here little Wishbone- who’s shoe is this?”

Wishbone sniffed the shoe then picked it up and gently carried it over to Sammi’s daddy, and laid it right beside him.

“He did it again” Sammi cheered. “ Wow, what a smart little beagle.” “It’s something hounds can do,“ explained Sammi’s mom. “They have a super nose. They can smell a smell and then they tell.” “That’s funny,” Sammi laughed. “You made a rhyme.”

Soon Sammi and Wishbone played the Smell and Tell Game everyday. Sammi would give Wishbone a sock. “Smell it , Wishbone. Now tell me- who’s sock this is”. Wishbone carried the sock gently over to Sammi’s best friend, Annie, and laid it down right beside her.

“Super good boy!” they shouted. The girls hugged Wishbone.

He wagged his tail so hard he almost fell over.

Sammi liked to take Wishbone for a walk every day. One day, as they started to go into the park, Sammi saw a lot of police and people running everywhere.

A woman sat on a bench crying. “What’s wrong?” Sammi asked. “My liitle girl is missing,” the woman told her. “She was just here. I looked away for just a second and now I can’t find her.”

“Look; she dropped her favorite teddy bear,” the mother said.

The woman cried even harder. “I’m so scared.

Sammi had an idea. She knelt down next to Wishbone and whispered in his ear. “Wishbone, want to play the smell and tell game?” Wishbone looked at her with his big brown eyes and wiggled all over.

“Excuse me.” Sammi called. “I think my little beagle can help.” All the police stopped running around and looked at Sammi. “We have a missing two year old. No time for games.” The police scolded.

“Please Let us help!” Sammi begged.

Wishbone sniffed the bear, then

gently picked it up. He walked across the park. . .

past the swings. . . .

through the trees. . .

Over a log. . . . . .

And laid it down, right next to a sleeping little girl!

“Alice, Oh Alice,” The woman joyfully said. ”Thank you so much.” “Not me.” Sammi smiled.

“That’s a mighty nice dog you have there,” said the Policeman. “Want to sell him?“ “Oh never,” Sammi shook her head. “Wishbone is my forever dog.”

“Well, then, how about being a junior search and rescue volunteer? You and Wishbone can help us.”

“Sammi hugged her very special beagle.“ “Would you like to be a search and rescue doggy?“ Sammi whispered.

Wishbone wagged his tail so hard he did fall over!

Wishbone is a certified trailing dog with the San Diego Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Canine Unit. He lives in San Diego with his four beagle brothers.
