Commentated by respected media identity Melissa Watter of Sequel PR, meet these inspiring women in medicine who have blazed a trail throughout their lives, personally and professionally. Dr Bronwyn King, Radiation Oncologist, has taken on big tobacco, encouraging over 33 of the big superannuation funds to divest themselves of tobacco shares - an incredible achievement on top of her role in medicine. Dr Homa Forotan arrived in Australia as a refugee, after her family fled Afghanistan. 2008’s Young Queenslander of the Year, Dr Forotan is now a junior physician at Princess Alexandra Hospital studying cardiology, and works tirelessly in the Brisbane community advocating for refugees. Dr Nikki Blackwell was a Specialist in palliative care and the Director of the Emergency Department in Mount Isa for many years. Currently, she is a Senior Staff Intensivist at Prince Charles Hospital. She has also worked for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in humanitarian emergencies in Haiti, Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Bandah Aceh, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Iraq, Iran and Jordan. Dr Bronwyn King

Dr Bronwyn King was born in Melbourne and educated at Fintona Girls’ School. She was the Dux of her year in 1992 and went on to study medicine at The University of Melbourne. In 2008, she completed her specialist training in radiation oncology and then enjoyed a fabulous year of further work and study in Toronto, Canada. In 2009, she took up a specialist appointment at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Dr King also works at the Epworth Hospital where she has a special interest in treating women’s cancers with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Dr King is a Radiation Oncologist and CEO of Tobacco Free Portfolios. Her collaborative work with finance industry executives has contributed to 33 Australian superannuation funds implementing tobacco free investment mandates, with more than $1.5 billion tobacco stocks divested. This work inspired the Global Task Force for Tobacco Free Portfolios, a 2015 initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control, backed by the World Health Organisation. Dr King is the honorary Tobacco Control Ambassador for Cancer Council Australia, an Australia Day Ambassador and an Ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia. Dr King represented Australia in swimming and served as Team Doctor for the Australian Swimming Team for ten years. In 2014, she was one of the AFR/Westpac 100 Women of Influence.

Dr Homa Forotan

Dr Homa Forotan is originally from Afghanistan. She moved to Australia in 2005 with her mother and siblings to join her father. After finishing high school, Homa studied science at the University of Queensland majoring in Biomedical and Neuroscience followed by Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Griffith University. She completed her residency at Princess Alexandra Hospital and now works as a medical registrar at Mater Hospital aiming to specialise in cardiology. Concurrently she is undertaking a dual masters in International Public Health and Health Economics at the University of New South Wales. Homa was an ex-co-founder of a tertiary student group, the Association of Australian Tertiary Students from Afghanistan (AATSA) that fosters interest in higher education and professional networking among Afghan-Australian youth. She has been part of various community based initiatives that aim to promote harmony, multiculturalism and interfaith dialogues.

Dr Nikki Blackwell

Dr Nikki Blackwell is a Senior Staff Intensivist at The Prince Charles Hospital. In her early career, Dr Nikki Blackwell was a Specialist in Palliative Care and was also the Director of the Emergency Department in Mount Isa. She has worked for many years and in various roles for Médecins Sans Frontières. Nikki is the founding member of the medical NGO, Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA), and was their Medical Director for four years. She remains actively involved in ALIMA. Nikki has worked in many humanitarian emergencies in countries including Haiti, Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Bandah Aceh, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Iraq, Iran and Jordan. None of this would have been possible without the unstinting support of her husband Jeremy and her colleagues. Preferred only to walking their dog Polie on the beach, Nikki also loves diving.
