WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH March 2018 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY March 8, 2018 25TH ANNUAL ALAMEDA COUNTY WOMEN’S HALL OF FAME March 24, 2018 WHEREAS, March is Women’s History Month and reminds us that women of every race and class have made contributions to the growth and strength of our nation; and WHEREAS, women have been leaders in securing rights of suffrage and equal opportunity and also in the emancipation, industrial labor, civil rights and peace movements to create a more fair and just society for all; and WHEREAS, women have been important in the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural institutions and have a critical role in the economic, cultural and societal spheres of life, constituting a significant portion of the labor force working in and outside of the home; and WHEREAS, in 2018, women are still deeply vulnerable to injustices in the workplace, in their communities and in their homes as many women still struggle to earn equal pay, have an equal voice, and live free of abuse and sexual harassment; and WHEREAS, women in the United States are re-energized by a new wave of feminism that is represented in the current national women’s movement that started with the Women’s March on Washington on January 21, 2017 and continued with the courageous outpouring of voices in the #metoo and #timesup movements; and WHEREAS, the theme of the 2018 International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress, which represents a call to action to strive for gender parity and encourage people and communities to think, act and be gender inclusive; and WHEREAS, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and the Commission on the Status of Women sponsor and celebrate the 25th Annual Women’s Hall of Fame awards luncheon to honor women, their work and contributions to Alameda County and its residents on March 24, 2018. NOW, THEREFORE, this Board of Supervisors, County of Alameda, State of California does hereby proclaim the month of March 2018 be designated as "Women's History Month" and March 8, 2018 be designated “International Women’s Day” and encourages all citizens to celebrate the achievements of women throughout history; and FURTHERMORE, this Board of Supervisors commends the 2018 Women’s Hall of Fame inductees for their distinguished accomplishments and contributions to Alameda County and expresses its appreciation to the organizers of the Women’s Hall of Fame.
