Chances are you won't actually be in the elevator when you deliver your pitch, but nevertheless, it should be delivered
Elevator Pitch An elevator pitch is your answer to the question: “So, what do you do?” Your elevator pitch is a short, clear and compelling explanation of you, your business, the value of your product or service and should encourage the listener to say “tell me more”. Chances are you won’t actually be in the elevator when you deliver your pitch, but nevertheless, it should be delivered quickly and in the time it would take someone to ride the elevator to their floor with the purpose of getting them to talk to you again after the elevator ride is over. Keep things simple and use this three part structure to craft your elevator pitch: 1. Who There are two parts to who: 1. Who you are 2. Who is your ideal customer 2. What A broad outline of the product or service you offer 3. Why The benefits and value people get when they work with you Your elevator pitch could end up sounding something like this: (Name of your business) provides (broad outline of your product or service) (who)

(what)

for (your ideal customer) who (describe the problem your business solves). (who)

(why)

Don’t limit yourself to only using this structure, it is just an example. When you deliver your pitch you need to be yourself, so structure it in a way that works best for you. It can take a little while to get your elevator pitch right. If people aren’t saying “tell me more”, go back and tweak it and try again until they do.

TIPS FOR YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH       

Don’t use jargon, keep the language simple so everyone can understand. Use words to inspire and engage your listener. Leave people wanting to know more about your business by only giving them a few details, don’t pack in too much. Have the important information first, in case you get cut off during your delivery. Be natural and authentic when you deliver your pitch, remember to smile and relax. Deliver with enthusiasm. Generally when you are really passionate about something that enthusiasm will just automatically come through. Practice, practice, practice. As they say, practice makes perfect.

Elevator Pitch Worksheet You are going to start out detailed and then simplify. When answering the questions, focus on anything that makes your business more interesting and memorable. Remember to use descriptive and inspiring words, words that are going to engage and excite your listener. Who, What, Why WHO (1): your business name

WHO (2): who do you serve? who is your ideal customer?

WHAT: describe your product or service

WHY: why do you do what you do? what problem does your business solve? what benefit and value do customers get from working with you? why do your customer’s care / what is in it for them?

OPTIONAL INFORMATION: why is your business different? what does your business do better than any other? what information do you want the listener to most remember?

Now go back and highlight the really important bits of information that you would like to get across. You can’t include everything in your elevator pitch. Just use what you think will be most compelling and engaging for your listener, to get them wanting to know more.

My Elevator Pitch PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER: write out your elevator pitch

Say it out loud. How does it sound ... too long? too complicated? too wordy? too confusing? If it’s not right, strip it back and simplify.

TRY AGAIN: write out your simplified elevator pitch

Sound better? Yes. Now go out and pitch.
