June is Recreation & Parks Month In the month of June the City of Woodstock and South Gate Centre will be participating in ‘June is Recreation & Parks Month’. ‘June is Recreation & Parks Month’ is an annual community mobilization movement that takes place in parks, schools, recreation centres and neighbourhoods across Ontario. The month is dedicated to getting children and families active in the community to promote physical activity, healthy eating and encourage safe play. On the City of Woodstock’s website at the link below, we will be posting all the activities, events, and opportunities there will be in June to get out, get active, and be healthy.

Message from the Mayor

Trevor Birtch, Mayor

When some people think of parks, they think of picnics and lazing in the grass while enjoying the sunshine. When others think of parks, they think of jogging and organized sports. No matter how you imagine spending time in the park, the City of Woodstock can accommodate your vision. Welcome to the 2017 Spring/Summer Recreation and Leisure Guide, which outlines hundreds of activities and locations throughout the Friendly City. From trails to skating, to swimming and running, to organized recreation programs or curling up under a tree with a good book, you will find something that will spike your interest. Take a moment to look through the guide and see what is available to you and your family to become active in the community. There is something for everyone, find the fit. Enjoy.

Swimming Lessons

*Add $5 for non-residents

What to expect from swimming lessons with instructors at the beginning or end of Developing swimming skills requires a lot of practice and positive feedback to be successful. We encourage you to talk with your child about his/her lessons. Make sure that you have realistic expectations and your child feels no pressure to “pass” a level. You both should acknowledge the importance of completing the skills taught in each lesson at a pace that is suitable for your child. Swimming lessons are a long-term progression.

each class about any concerns.

Deck Supervisor

If your child cannot be placed in any of your class choices, he/she will be placed on a waiting list, in numerical order, for your requested class time. If a spot opens staff will contact you and inform you that a spot has opened up and you will have 24hrs to register for your reserved spot. If you are registered in a class already, we cannot put you on a waiting list for another class.

We have, during all lesson times, a deck supervisor available to you. If you have any concerns, questions, or comments please do not hesitate to communicate with this designated person at any time. They are available to you to make sure your child is having a safe and fun lesson every class.

First Lesson In our effort to ensure that your child receives the best possible instruction, we ask that you bring your child’s most recent report card with him/her to the first lesson. This will help your swim instructor tailor their classes to effectively meet the needs of each child.

Fifth Lesson On the fifth lesson for each session we offer parents and guardians an opportunity to take photos of their child swimming. As well, instructors will end the class 5 minutes early to do a mini-evaluation and talk to parents about any concerns they may have. Please ask the deck supervisor for more details.

Progress Evaluation All participants in swimming lessons are evaluated on an ongoing basis throughout the session. Parents or guardians may talk

Registration and Transfers Registration will be permitted as long as space is available in the classes Transfers will be permitted for the first 2 weeks of lessons. Talk to the deck supervisor immediately if you feel your child needs to be transferred, so we can make the switch as soon as possible.

Waiting Lists

We Cancelled It Sometimes excellent programs with super instructors are cancelled when too many people wait until the last minute to register. Don’t wait, avoid disappointment and register early! Classes with low enrolment will be either cancelled or combined with another level approximately 10 days prior to the start date.

Instructors, Assistant Instructors and Volunteers All classes will be taught by a qualified instructor. Our instructors have spent more than 200 hours taking courses and volunteering in aquatic instructional programs to prepare them to teach your children. As well, our assistant instructors are assigned to programs each evening. They are our future instructors and have

spent more than 100 hours taking courses and volunteering in preparation to assist with classes. The assistant instructors are assigned to classes the supervisor feels would most benefit from their involvement.

Concerns or Questions? Your feedback is very important to us as it helps us provide quality programs and successful aquatic experiences. A pool deck supervisor is on duty at all times during our lesson programs. As lesson experts, the supervisors are available to answer your questions and assist with any of your concerns. Should you have a concern, do not hesitate to speak with a pool deck supervisor immediately we encourage you to not wait until the last class.

Inclement Weather During inclement weather, please check the city’s website (www.cityofwoodstock.ca) and the city of Woodstock Facebook page for any cancellations.

Success with the WLC can be gained with a positive attitude and putting forth a best effort each week. We will be learning and practicing together as a team, so respect for ourselves and each other is a very important component in our progress. Please arrive to practice on time, ready to give your best effort so that the team can achieve their goals together. The fundamental group is a chance for stroke development and the introductions of lifesaving sport. Once learning the basic skills, participants will be challenged with increasing distance as well as increasingly demanding skill sequences. Recommended: Completed Swimmer 3 Ages: 8-12

Playgrounds

Rotary Skate/Bike Park

The City of Woodstock has 34 playgrounds located in 51 parks. The replacement and upgrading of playground equipment with city funds remains a challenge that the community can help us with. Local community groups and School Parent Councils can help to expedite the replacement or enhancement of playgrounds in their area through local fundraising. City staff will meet with interested citizens or groups to help develop a fundraising plan for your playground. By getting involved in this way, you’ll assist us in designing a playground that not only meets safety standards but reflects your community’s special needs. If you would like to discuss fundraising for your neighbourhood or would like to sponsor a playspace please call the Parks and Recreation office. If you notice damage to city parks please contact the Park office at 519-539-2382 Ext. 4101.

Playground Safety Tips To ensure that playgrounds are safe for our children we need to work together! Here are some safety tips which parents and caregivers should be familiar with and teach your children. • Playgrounds are not to be used during freezing or wet conditions, • Remove cords and drawstrings on children’s hoods, hats and jackets, • Tuck in all clothing that can get caught on playground equipment, • Wear a neck warmer instead of a scarf, • Take off bicycle helmets before using playground equipment. Bicycle helmets can get trapped in equipment and strangle a child, • Make sure children do not tie ropes or skipping ropes to slides and other playground equipment, • Supervise children on the playground, • Teach children how to use playground equipment and play safely, • Pets are not allowed on playground surfaces.

Hosting Festivals & Events in Woodstock Planning a Festival or Event? The urban forest is made up of all the trees growing in the City of Woodstock, including city owned street and park trees, trees in forested areas, as well as trees on private property. Trees are an important part of Woodstock’s urban landscape, and provide a wide variety of social, health, aesthetic, economic and environmental benefits. The City’s Forestry Department manages Woodstock’s urban forest using a long-term, sustainable strategy of development and maintenance in order to provide a healthy green cover on public lands.

PARKS & OPEN SPACES

Outside of the Leash free Parks, the requirements of the Dog Control By-Law must be met at all times: • Dogs must be on a leash, • Dogs must wear an up-to-date City of Woodstock License tag, • Owners must “stoop and scoop” their dog’s waste, • Owners must maintain control at all times. Others dogs and people may not appreciate your dog approaching them.

Arbor Day

The City of Woodstock recognizes the importance that festivals and events can play in our community. They contribute to our quality of life, local economic development and community identity. The city intends to be proactive in attracting new events, as well as working with existing event organizers to support the success of their activities. We can assist event organizers in identifying the permits and approvals required to provide a safe and successful event. Anyone planning an outdoor festival or event must first contact the Parks & Recreation Department to obtain event guidelines to ensure all requirements for hosting an event are in place. For more information contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 519-539-2382 Ext. 4101.

Tree Planting Ceremony Each year Woodstock celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees at a preselected school in our community. Students, teachers, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to help plant a variety of trees and shrubs. Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in 1872 where a day was set aside and over a million trees were planted. This idea quickly spread to neighbouring states and to Canada. Today we still celebrate by planting trees each spring in Woodstock. Do your part to green up Woodstock by participating in Arbor Day activities by planting a tree at your residence.

Emerald Ash Borer The City of Woodstock Parks Department is faced with many challenges with the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. We are in the last stage of removing, stumping white and green Ash trees on several city streets. We will be replacing Ash trees with several different species of trees that live successfully in a street boulevard. If there is any trimming required on a city boulevard tree please call the Parks and Recreation office. The Park staff will evaluate the tree and do all necessary work. Please do your part and water the trees when it is required. (See below).

Watering Young Street Trees The goal is moist soil as far as 8 to 12 inches below the surface. • For the first three years, young trees need weekly watering from mid-April to mid-October. • Probe your soil below the surface before watering. If the soil feels moist and sticky, allow it to dry for several more days before watering. If the soil feels dry and crumbly, water deeply once a week. • Water deeply by setting your hose on a slow trickle at the base of the tree or use a soaker hose around the tree. On average, your tree will need 15 gallons of water per week. • Remember that lawn watering will not replace the need to deeply water young trees.

• Mulch will keep soil temperatures cool, retain water, and discourage weeds. It will slowly decompose and should be replenished as needed during the first three growing years. • Fertilizer is not recommended at planting time. Trees come with enough fertilizer from the nursery, and over time mulch will provide new nutrients to the tree. • Avoid using “weed and feed” fertilizers. They contain herbicides that can damage or kill young trees.

Pruning All pruning will be done by the City of Woodstock Parks Department staff. Any damages done to a street tree by a homeowner pruning may include a fine of the removal and full cost of a replacement tree. Please contact the Park and Recreation office at 519‑539‑2382 Ext. 4101 with any tree inquiries.

Weeding and Protecting Keeping your tree out of harm’s way

Mulching Young Trees 4 feet in diameter, 4 inches from the trunk, and 4 inches deep The City of Woodstock places mulch around the new street tree, but not around the trunk which creates a healthy environment for the tree. Please follow the next guidelines. • Remember the 4x4x4 rule: spread mulch in a 4-foot diameter around the tree, 4 inches away from the trunk, and 4 inches deep.

68

Recreation & Leisure Guide

• Weeds and grass compete with trees for water and nutrients. They are also allopathic (they produce a chemical which inhibits other plant growth, including trees). • Do not use weed trimmers or lawn mowers near the base of trees. Hand-pull weeds instead. When the thin bark of young trees is injured, the bark will split and die back. This can cause disease, unwanted pests, and the sun to scald the bark, resulting in decay or death. • For optimal tree growth and health, keep a four foot circle around your young tree clear of grass, weeds, or other plant life.

The Woodstock Youth Advisory Committee is a group of several young individuals from each of the high schools within the City who gather to represent Woodstock’s youth. The purpose of the Youth Advisory Committee is to receive direct citizen input into matters relating to youth aged 13-21. This is done through regular meetings with youth centered groups and services as well as direct input by youth. The Committee meets in the Council Chambers at City Hall monthly (except during the summer) with their main goal being to create a more youth friendly Woodstock. This year the main focus of the committee is to showcase the great youth groups
