Editor’s Note Dear readers,

This issue marks the beginning of 2015 and the end of what has been an eventful 2014. Flipping through the magazine, you’ll find an interesting and diverse line-up of projects and product showcases from around the world! One example would be an exhibition by Ai Weiwei at the infamous Alcatraz entitled @Large—an installation that explores human rights and freedom of expression by way of seven sculptures, sound and media works. Meyer Sound provided their loudspeakers for this project. The cover story of this issue features a world record-breaking projection-mapping showcase in Romania. It’s interesting to see how the organisers have managed to put together a visually stunning showcase against such a large floor surface. Read on to find out how Maxin10sity managed to pull it off. And, of course, this magazine is full of project showcases across various venues and environments, such as concerts, churches and broadcast stations, and a catalogue of the latest products in the market. I hope you’ll enjoy reading this issue as much as I have enjoyed putting it together! Best regards,

Nur Shakylla Nadhra (Editor)

OSRAM ACHIEVES RECORD FIGURES WITH GREEN LEDS

T

he “Hi-Q-LED” project funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has made pioneering advances with green LEDs, greatly diminishing what is known as the “green gap” phenomenon—the significant drop in efficacy in the green spectral range. The result is a greenemitting LED based on indium gallium nitride (InGaN) semiconductors, which achieves a record efficacy of 147 lumens per watt (lm/W) at a wavelength of 530 nanometers (nm) and a spectral width of 35 nm. In addition, another green LED developed by combining a blue chip with a phosphor converter has achieved a record-breaking efficacy exceeding 200 lm/W.

Green all-InGaN LEDs close the “green gap” Conventional LEDs show a significant efficacy drop at wavelengths above 500 nm—a phenomenon known as the “green gap”. Research activities in the framework of the project have enabled the development of a narrowband green LED with a record efficacy of 147 lm/W for a chip size of 1 mm 2 and a driving current of 350 mA (current density: 45 A/cm 2 ). The LED has a central wavelength of 530 nm and a forward voltage of 2.93 volts (V) at this current density. A reduction of the carrier density in the light-emitting layers and a significantly improved material quality were the key factors behind this breakthrough.

Record-breaking efficacy of >200 lm/W achieved with a green full conversion phosphor solution The second approach of the project, which was to create a new, even more efficient green LED, comes into play in cases where the spectral bandwidth of the LED is not critical. Record-breaking figures demonstrated were 209 lm/W (210 lm) with a chip size of 1mm 2 , a central wavelength of 540 nm, a forward voltage of 2.88 V and a driving current of 350 mA (current density: 45 A/cm 2 ). For a current density of 125 A/cm 2 , it proved possible to increase the light output to above 500 lm. Despite this high current density, the efficacy of these devices amounts to 160 lm/W. The efficacy peaks at 1.5 A/cm 2 with a maximum of 274 lm/W. According to Osram research engineer Dr. Thomas Lehnhardt, these exceptional performance figures have been achieved thanks to the optimised interaction of chip and converter technologies: “Continuous improvement of the blue LED chips, an optimised excitation wavelength and an increased degree of conversion of the phosphor converter are the winning combinations underlying the new recordbreaking LED.”

Thanks to a significantly reduced dependency of the efficacy on the operating current compared to conventional green LEDs, the LED prototype shows significantly improved performance at higher current densities and achieves as much as 338 lumen (lm) at 125 A/cm 2 . “InGaN-based LEDs, in which the light output is generated by an InGaN semiconductor

From prototypes to series production At the moment, the unprecedented figures achieved by the two LED prototypes still can only be ranked as development data. More time will be needed to develop products based on the findings of the research project with optimised price and performance and which are well suited for mass production.

As part of the “LED Lead Market Initiative” funded by the BMBF, the working group for “Efficient LED Solutions with High Colour Rendering Indices” in the “Hi-Q-LED” project headed by Osram Opto Semiconductors has developed two pathbreaking green LED prototypes.

exclusively, offer a much more narrowband emission with a spectral width of approximately 35 nm compared to green LEDs that are based on phosphor conversion. This breakthrough is an enabling technology for highly efficient projection systems requiring a high colour rendering index,” stressed Dr. Andreas Löffler, Project Manager at Osram Opto Semiconductors. After all, a high colour rendering index or an increased colour gamut means a more vivid, higher-quality image.

PAINTING WITH LIGHT ANNOUNCES RESTRUCTURE

B

elgian based creative lighting and visual design practice Painting W ith Light has announced a restructure, with Luc Peumans becoming the majority shareholder and CEO with immediate effect, taking over all the company’s day-to-day management. Luc founded Genk–based Painting W ith Light in 1999. He said: “To move forward on the same trajectory for the next 15 years, I needed to be fully in control and accept responsibility for our future strategies, investments and direction—and so the deal was negotiated on that basis.” He added that he and his former business partners—Dimi Theuwissen and Jim Stas—are looking forward to new challenges and horizons, have parted “on the best possible terms”, and are very proud of what the award winning company has achieved to date. Painting W ith Light specialises in creating lighting, set and visual designs for shows and live events encompassing a broad spectrum of the entertainment industry. It also works on key architectural projects and installations, where its multidisciplinary approach has produced a unique “crossover” style that can bring built environments and spaces of all types to life. The company is a market leader in these sectors in the Benelux regions and inter nationally. The last three years in particular have been extremely busy, and seen Painting W ith Light’s involvement with numerous high profile and cutting-edge visual projects worldwide. Ongoing projects include: “Dream Girls” the musical, touring the Netherlands for the next five months; the new Holiday On Ice show, “Passion”; creating lighting designs for girlband K3 and maverick Belgian rockers Clouseau; designing a new set design for VTM TV show “Tegen de Sterren Op” and several others. Peumans was nominated for a 2014 Knight of Illumination award for his work on the acclaimed Music Hall Events’ production of “Peter Pan” earlier in 2014, and in 2012 collected a City.

People.Light Award for creative lighting at the C-MINE–former coal mine tur ned visitor attraction—development in home town Genk. The company’s new headquarters is also located at the historically significant C-MINE site in the mine’s former horse stables, a listed building that has been lovingly restored by Peumans over the last two years, combining imagination and industrial heritage with moder nist invention.

masses," said Jeromy Young, CEO and Founder of Atomos. "W ith Power Station we've solved perhaps the biggest problem of all—the need for an endless supply of power. You don't need massive batteries or multiple batteries for different devices anymore. The Power Station allows you to use smaller, lighter, more affordable camera batteries and output up to three DC streams for cameras, monitors, recorders and lighting. It also doubles as a super-fast charger for your batteries – finally a complete solution."

Atomos has made a product that will give cameramen peace of mind and allow them to focus on the shot and not the clock. Power Station is a dual battery device with connections to power up to three DC devices and two USB devices simultaneously. Dual DC outputs and included splitter cable allow powering of up to three DC devices on the rig. W ith a maximum output of 5W, the Power Station allows users to charge an entire rig from DSLR and lighting to monitors and Atomos recorders. Meanwhile, the dual USB power source allows users to charge a single high-powered 2A device (eg iPad) or two lower powered 1A devices with two included 2600mAh batteries enough to charge an iPhone5 from 0 to 100 per cent—three times over. If you need more juice just swap the dead primary battery for a new one while the

secondary continues the job—endless power. W ith the Power Station, cameramen will know exactly how much power they have at any given time. The independent left and right LED displays on the front of Power Station give a quick five-step visual guide on the power remaining for each battery from 100 per cent down to 10 per cent. The user will always know when to swap the exhausted battery and have hours to do so. There are also DC Adapters available for popular cameras including A7s, GH4, 5DMKIII, FS700, C100 and more. Power Station is also an advance super-fast charger for dual batteries by simply charging the included 2600mAh NP series batteries in one hour for maximum speed and convenience.

VESET ANNOUNCES ZIXI HAS JOINED THE NIMBUS ALLIANCE PROGRAMME

V

eset, the pioneering cloud based playout solutions provider, and Zixi, the industry leader for enabling live broadcast-quality video delivery over public inter net and private IP networks have announced that Zixi has joined the Nimbus Alliance Programme. Fraser Jardine, CCO of Veset said: “We are delighted that such an innovative player as Zixi has become our partner. We are very excited by the response to this programme from other broadcast technology providers looking to join our alliance. Our Alliance aims to deliver solutions to broadcast clients by working together and seamlessly integrating our best of breed products.” Raymond Thompson, Vice President of Marketing at Zixi, said: “We look forward to combining our IP

transport capabilities with Veset’s expertise in playout. We believe this is a winning combination for our global broadcast clients looking to increase flexibility for automation of scheduling and IP based public or private cloud playout while being able to reduce costs.” Nimbus, Veset’s powerful cloud playout platform, has already been integrated with the Zixi Family of products, such as Zixi Broadcaster Platform & Zixi Edge Points – Feeder/Receiver. Jardine concluded: “Offering customers a fully integrated cloud-based playout solution is very important as the take up of cloud playout operations increase.”

PIXEL POWER PARTNERS WITH DIGIMETRICS FOR FILE-BASED QC

P

ixel Power, the innovative supplier of broadcast graphics and playout solutions, has completed an agreement with Digimetrics, which will see the Aurora file-based quality control system integrated into Gallium content management and playout workflows from Pixel Power. Aurora provides market-leading quality control, and is an ideal fit for Gallium’s intelligent workflows. Pixel Power developed Gallium as the workflow engine for its ChannelMaster playout automation and its Pixel Factory file based media assembly solution. It is a powerful and flexible automation controller, which allows very sophisticated, rules-based workflows to be created and implemented. In a file-based environment, content may come to the Gallium environment from a number of sources, and increasingly there is a demand for quality control at this stage to ensure a seamless and standardised output. The Digimetrics Aurora platform tackles all four critical QC areas: metadata gatekeeping; visual and audible limits and artefacts (including loudness); detecting editing problems; and testing for broadcast and distribution

constraints. The latest version, Aurora 5, performs all these tests in a 64-bit environment on standard IT servers. Each instance of the Aurora software runs in a defined number of cores, allowing for multiple pieces of content to be tested at the same time without impacting overall performance and delivering results predictably. “Aurora is a great partner for Gallium workflows,” said James Gilbert, CEO of Pixel Power. “It tackles all aspects of quality control in smart test plans, and performs the tests extremely quickly. Even 4k files can be tested faster than real time.” “Not only is it fast, but because of the way it manages its resources we can deliver guaranteed QC times to our users,” he added. “Our tests have shown that it generates far fewer false positives than other high performance systems, and its built-in Hydra player makes it easy for engineers to check any questioned material. We are already building systems that integrate Aurora into Gallium, and we see the two products as market leaders coming together to create something more than the sum of their parts.”

CreateLED’s R&D team has also broken new ground with its three innovative LED fish tanks hanging from both sides of the ceiling—their diameters ranging from five, four and three meters. The bottom of the fish tank uses CreateLED’s waterproof AirULTRA-6 LED display. W ith the help of its creative visuals, visitors would be able to see vivid images of fish swimming from one tank to another. To ensure visual focus, CreateLED designed four ultra thin LED displays (each 12m high and four meters wide) using its high-end AirMAG-7 LED display. The total size covers 192sqm and each screen flows down like a giant curtain, giving visitors a dynamic visual effect.

MEYER SOUND GIVES VOICES TO GLOBAL DISSIDENTS IN @LARGE: AI WEIWEI ON ALCATRAZ Meyer Sound loudspeakers play a critical role in @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz, an exhibition of seven new sculpture, sound, and mixed media works by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The installation explores human rights and freedom of expression in the context of Alcatraz, a former federal penitentiary and now iconic historical site in the San Francisco Bay. W idely hailed as one of the most significant art exhibitions of the year, @Large already has been featured in The New York T imes, T ime Magazine, and The Guardian— among others. This extraordinary $3.6 million project on Alcatraz Island was originally proposed to Ai by Cheryl Haines, Executive Director of the FOR-SITE Foundation and curator of the exhibition.

“Ai’s work both awes us with its grace and beauty, and challenges and critiques our way of thinking—in a manner that we hope will catalyse public dialogue on many human rights issues,” said Haines. The inspiration for the exhibition is rooted in the reality of Ai Weiwei’s life. Forbidden by authorities to travel outside of China, the artist created the works for the installation in his Beijing Studio. “The misconception of totalitarianism is that freedom can be imprisoned,” said Ai Weiwei. “This is not the case. When you constrain freedom, freedom will take flight and land on a windowsill.” Singled out by Los Angeles T imes writer, Carolina A. Miranda, as “one of my favorite pieces in the exhibition for its subtlety,” Stay

Tuned is an intimate and evocative sound installation occupying 12 barren and deteriorating prison cells in Alcatraz’s A Block. The installation features different music or spoken recitations in each cell created by people who have been imprisoned for the creative expression of their beliefs, as well as works created under incarceration. Artists range from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Russian rock group Pussy Riot to the South African anti-apartheid activists The Robben Island Singers. Driving Stay Tuned are 12 compact yet powerful MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers with IntelligentDC™ technology. As Ai insisted the loudspeakers be invisible, they are mounted behind a rusting ventilation grate. Two MM-10ACX subwoofers support music by Iranian Arya Aramnejad and Nigerian Fela Kuti. Sound design for Stay Tuned was handled by San Francisco-based Moment Audio Group, a spinoff of Earwax Productions, where sound artists and engineers Jim McKee and Jeremiah Moore worked jointly with producer Starr Sutherland.

“The quality and invisibility of the loudspeakers contribute to the work’s startlingly evocative effect,” noted Moore. “It’s only one person at a time in the cell, and the clarity of sound leads to a startling directness and intimacy.” The MM-4XP loudspeakers also helped Moore deal with the limitations of the site. “We needed a loudspeaker with very low distortion, high power, and proven reliability, and the MM-4XP was ideal on all counts,” he said. “In addition, Meyer Sound’s exclusive IntelligentDC technology enabled us to run DC power for the amplifiers and the audio signal over a single cable from our equipment room 120 feet away. We didn’t have to sacrifice power and clarity because of long speaker cables.” Source recordings for Stay Tuned are played on an Apple Mac mini running QLab software. Output to two MPS488HP IntelligentDC power supplies is via an RME Fireface 400 interface augmented by an Aphex Model 141 ADAT to Analog converter. One of the most prominent cultural figures of the 21st century, Ai Weiwei is a Beijing-based artist and activist known for his work in sculpture, installations, film, architecture and photography. His work often responds to conditions in China, including limits placed on free speech and expression, and his personal experience of incarceration. @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz is scheduled to run through April 26, 2015.

WAAGNER-BIRO FOR SINGAPORE’S ESPLANADE - THEATRES ON THE BAY Photos cour tesy of Waagner-Biro

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay opened in 2002 and is one of the busiest performance centers in Asia. Known for its unique durian-like roof, the Esplanade is a building located on six hectares of waterfront land, purpose-built to be the center for Singapore’s performing arts, including a theatre with a capacity of 2,000 and a concert hall that sits about 1,600. Apart from performance space, the center houses a library and a shopping mall.

48

Jan-Mar 2015

After a planning period, the client decided in 2013 to replace the automated fly system of the theatre as part of an effort to meet the growing requirements and demands of modern stage design. Further exigencies include user friendliness, reliability and easy maintenance. After a long evaluation process involving four qualified companies, Waagner-Biro was awarded with the contract on 14 May 2013 to carry out the replacement in 2014.

ENTERTAINMENT

TECHNOLOGIES

This was Waagner-Biro’s second contract in Singapore after the supply and installation of an automatic seating system in the Suntec City International Conference and Exhibition Center in 1997. The big challenge was to replace the upper machinery within only five months, starting with the dismantling of bulky, heavyweight hoists. Waagner-Biro sent an experienced employee on-site

to coordinate the dismantling and installation works together with its own team and a local stage company, thus guaranteeing a smooth project flow. The scope of supply included more than 100 drives and a CAT V4 control system, which was integrated with the existing equipment. The new system has a number of distinct advantages. It is more user-friendly with sophisticated software

that makes it easier to programme even the most complicated performances. It is more efficient and is able to carry heavier loads. The new system is also more flexible and costs less to service and maintain. It also has a strong back-up system, which tracks and analyses faults in real time so that glitches can be addressed in the shortest possible time. The work started on 2 May 2014 and has been realised in a record time of only five months. The theatre was handed over in time on 3 October 2014 and the official opening followed on 9 October 2014. All works were done according to Singapore Standards and local regulations.

EXPO AV-INSYNC (EAI) was chosen to provide full technical production for the first ever FREQ’ender dance festival in Singapore and the company wasted no time in specifying its Martin Audio MLA system for the two-day event, which was held at Infinite Studios and promoted by Limited Edition Concepts (Singapore). Over 4,500 people attended the festival, which was split into two distinct days—the first (in conjunction with Hallowe’en) was named Freq’show, and this made way on Day 2 for Mekanika, produced by international Trance Festival brand, Godskitchen. EAI Managing Director, Gerard Rodrigues, confirmed that the MLA system was recommended by his company. “The end result was that everyone, including the promoters, really felt the music and were amazed at the audio quality. They were really blown away. The MLX subs also became a talking point for many of the AV industry professionals who attended the gig as well.”

EAI kept the same rig in place for both days, with hangs of eight elements per side (plus a single MLD Downfill). The 12 MLX subs were ground-stacked in configurations of two + four + four + two. In addition, the company supplied eight W8LM Mini line arrays and four WS218X subs as a potent DJ monitor system. Limited Edition Concepts’ Director and co-founder, Godwin Pereira, was certainly impressed. “W ith EXPO AV’s experience, it was easy to get the best out of the MLA system, and the sound behaved superbly in the 18,000 sq ft sound stage. It was warm and non-intrusive, producing little in the way of ‘noise’; instead, it delivered purity, clarity and a whole lot of thump!” In addition to what Rodrigues described as “awesome sound”, he said the audience was also treated to lighting and projection mapping during the festival. The event featured global acts covering electro, trance, house, techno and many other genres, including Hot Chip, 2ManyDJs, GlowInTheDark and Marco V, along with over 20 live performers and dancers from Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia!

WSDG A HIT FOR THE METROPLEX AT HONG KONG’S KITEC The Metroplex, a luxurious nine-screen multiplex cinema, opened last year in Hong Kong’s iconic Kowloon Bay International Trade & Exhibition Centre. Situated adjacent to the widely popular Star Hall, a 3,600-seat scene of many major international concerts, The Metroplex is a self-operated independent cinema showing a wide range of films ranging from Hollywood blockbusters to international award-winners, festival

entries, local, specialty and independent films. Beyond its cutting edge technical advantages, Metroplex has the flexibility to cross platform live streaming, concerts and shows, multimedia conferences, and many other events. To support these presentations, the complex was designed to host premieres, dinners, cocktail parties and business gatherings.

An investment property of Hopewell Holdings Limited, the complex reflects the Group’s vast experience in operating large-scale venues, and it establishes a new level of lavish comfort for filmgoers. Their unique concept was to bridge the gap between film and music by creating crossover events and festivals that would benefit from the venue’s diverse dining, socialising, large and small theaters and intimate screening rooms. They were also deeply concerned with the need to provide their audiences with the highest quality audio. To achieve that level of acoustic excellence, the developers retained the services of the Walters-Storyk Design Group (WSDG). Company Principal/Director of International Relations, Sergio Molho, reported that WSDG provided a comprehensive review of the architectural master plan layouts and prepared a detailed analysis of the acoustic package recommendations provided by a local consultant. Particular attention was addressed to issues of Sound isolation and (RT60) internal room acoustics. The client’s primary concern was to assure absolute sound isolation between the movie theaters and the large event hall located on the upper floor specifically with regard to NC and STC parameters. House #1, the Metroplex’s largest theater, accommodates an

Additionally, three plush VIP Screening Suites (#’s 7, 8, 9) have been created to host elite clusters of 20 guests each. Theaters 1, 3 and all three of the VIP Suites offer opulent reclining lounge chairs, state of the art lighting, exquisite interior designs and Dolby® Atmos™+ Dolby Surround 7. 1 sound. The four other theaters are outfitted with Dolby Surround 7.1. The futuristic lobby and dining areas provide an unsurpassed ambience for elegant gatherings. “These theaters are among the most sumptuous we have ever seen,” Sergio noted. “The developers spared no expense in creating a new standard of luxury and comfort for their guests, no extravagance was overlooked. Their mission statement was clear: ‘we are here to pamper our audience and to provide the ultimate environment for ideal viewing and listening excellence’. We made a special point of doing everything possible to help them reach that goal.”

JAPAN’S FUJI TV WAKES UP WITH ETC’S DESIRE D60 DAYLIGHT It was a challenge for the technical crew of Fuji Television Network Inc. (Fuji TV) and Fuji Media Technology Inc. (fmt), to find the right fixture to light the set built in the globe-shaped observation room located on the 24th floor of their building. In the end, they discovered that ETC’s Selador® Desire® D60 Daylight luminaires were the perfect fit. “Our task was to light this set built in a space that was once a coffee shop, with minimal power,” said Hitoshi Hoshino, Executive Manager of fmt. “The space also had only 2400millimeters (7.87 feet) to the ceiling, so it was impossible to use incandescent lights—not only because of the power restrictions, but also the heat.” The set was built for the live morning talk/news show Mezamashi TV (“Alarm Clock TV”). Right behind the cast are windows with the view of Tokyo that creates

a backlight, which changes with the time and weather. The biggest challenge was balancing the natural light from the windows and the front light on the cast. Fuji TV’s Chief Lighting Designer, Atsuhiro Kobayashi, had to put a filter on the window to tone down the natural light. “After testing multiple LED fixtures, we found that the Desire Daylight with a filter gave us the best balance on camera,” he said. With the low ceiling and the lights being so close to the cast, they needed fixtures that would not overheat. “When tall guests come onto the set, they have to duck under the fixtures. By using LED fixtures, we did not have to worry about people touching the fixtures and burning their fingers or scorching their hair,” Hoshino said with a laugh. “We are happy with the choice we made.” Article by ETC Exclusive Japanese Distributor: Ken Production Service Inc.

L-ACOUSTICS WIFO DOES DOUBLE-DUTY FOR COMMUNITY REFORMED CHURCH IN THE US Community Reformed Church in Zeeland, Michigan (USA) has taken on the sobriquet of “one of the bestsounding churches in Western Michigan” thanks to the recent integration of two separate L-ACOUSTICS ARCS “WIFO” systems. Installed by AV systems integrator, Parkway Communications, the first system replaces an existing 10-year-old PA in the main sanctuary, while the other is used to transform the church’s adjacent gymnasium into an extended worship space for overflow seating as attendance has grown.

72

Jan-Mar 2015

The sanctuary system is comprised of two ARCS WIDE and four ARCS FOCUS enclosures—hence “WIFO”— coupled with four SB18m subs, two coaxial 12XT fills and a pair of LA8 amplified controllers for power and processing. In the gym, two ARCS WIDE and two ARCS FOCUS are paired with a single SB18m and LA8. The sanctuary audio upgrade also included a new DiGiCo SD9 console.

However, this was not just another project for Parkway Communications, which has a huge portfolio of HOW projects. Gary Zandstra, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Holland, MI-based integrator, is a member of Community Reformed Church and often mixes the sound for services there along with Parkway colleague Josh Maichele, who has also mixed live sound for country music headliners Toby Keith and Keith Anderson, as well as classic rocker Mark Farner. So the sound in this church was personal as well as professional.

needed. “The WIFO combination is perfect for keeping energy off of the walls and on the audience,” said Zandstra. “Vocals really pop out crystal clear. In the gym, where the portable stage is mounted against the long wall, WIFO is able to give us the vertical dispersion we need to fill that kind of space without any problem.” Zandstra added that once the acoustical treatment materials had been added to the sanctuary area, the church was indeed transformed into “the best-sounding church in Western Michigan”.

“The sanctuary has had issues for years with reflections that affect intelligibility, and the gym would naturally have the same kind of challenge because of the hard reflective surfaces,” said Zandstra, who added that the same committee-based processes of most houses of worship had slowed down acoustical treatments in this church’s sanctuary by several years. Work began in the gym first, with planning for the sanctuary system replacement starting soon after. Both systems came online within a month of each other this year, and both have been just what the church

THE DALAI LAMA PRESENTS 2014 KALACHAKRA PRAYER WITH DPA MICROPHONES

Earlier this year, His Holiness the Dalai Lama hosted Kalachakra, a religious event that takes place at various locations around the world every few years. W ith a now 79-year-old religious figure at the helm for the nearly two-week long Kalachakra 2014 prayer meeting, high importance was placed on finding a microphone that would project his voice to the nearly 200,000 followers who attended. The solution was found in DPA Microphones’ d:fine™ Dual-Ear Cardioid Headset Microphone, which was supplied from the

company’s US office. The microphone was such a success that it is now the preferred microphone for His Holiness for all of his speaking engagements. As the sound company of choice for the Dalai Lama, Reynolds Sound & Lighting Services supported the 2014 prayer ceremony, which was held in Ladakh—up in the Himalayas, nearly 5,000 meters above sea level. In addition to braving the treacherous travel to the location, the audio team from Reynolds was also faced

I had contacted my friend and colleague Ron [Lorman] in New York, and explained that I was unsure that my previous mics would have the amount of gain that I needed. We additionally discussed the unique monitor needs for this event, as it was mandatory that the source element provided a flat response with substantial rear rejection. Ron recommended the d:fine products and he put me in touch with the company during a visit to the US. DPA Inc. supplied me with four mics to try out, which I brought back to India. My team was extremely happy with the quality.” Once

the

the

Himalayas,

Reynolds’ audio team, led by Sound Engineer Suresh J, were able to put them to the test for the first time. “We chose to use the cardioid version of the mic for the Kalachakra,” added Remedios. “We had never used DPA mics before, but one of the first things we noticed was that there was no coloration in the signal. His Holiness’ voice sounded extremely natural and transparent, and we were able to get the gain levels we wanted. The DPA d:fine is certainly a big quantum leap from what we are used to—both in signal levels from the mic and overall quality of the design.” In addition to the location of the prayer meeting, the overall setup of the stage and personal preferences of His Holiness also provided a unique set of challenges. The Dalai Lama sits on a high throne, surrounded by several senior monks both in front of and to each side of him. “Since we have worked with him for several years, we know that the microphone must always be placed beside him on stage so he or a member of his team can put it on him,” continued Remedios. “In order for a mic to get the perfect amount of gain, it must sit exactly in the correct position. Luckily, the DPA d:fine is designed in a manner that even an untrained person can affix the mic. The Dalai Lama’s media team representative, Jigme Tsering, was able to fit it onto His Holiness each day. It worked out so well that on the last day the Dalai Lama put the microphone on himself and was very pleased.” His Holiness was not the only one impressed by the DPA d:fine Headset Microphones. “The Dalai Lama’s media team was so pleased with the quality of the microphone that they asked to keep it for his smaller prayer meetings,” said Remedios. “Of course we obliged and gifted them one. We also decided to follow suit. As one of the largest audio rental companies in the country, we work with the biggest corporate houses for several important, large-scale events. We plan to use DPA on all of them. It is definitely going to be our microphone of choice moving forward.”

An Allen & Heath Live digital mixing system has been installed in the Great Reformed Church in Debrecen, Hungary. The historic neoclassical church has a footprint of some 1,500m² and a capacity of 5,000, including 3,000 seated. The church commissioned a full overhaul of its audio systems to improve speech intelligibility, and to accommodate broadcast of services and performances by its worship band. The brief called for a system that

was capable of ‘one button’ operation for regular services, whilst having the flexibility to handle patching to and from multiple areas of the church, multitrack recording and broadcast feeds. Krisztian Varga from Hungarian pro audio specialist, Audmax, designed the solution, with a modular Allen & Heath iLive iDR10 MixRack at its core, feeding a discreet white L-Acoustics KIVA system for the main arrays and L-Acoustics 5XT speakers for additional speakers.

During normal operation, the iDR10 is controlled with a single Allen & Heath PL-10 remote controller customised with large green and red buttons. For daily operation, the pastor simply needs to push the green button to run the system in normal mode, allowing limited control over their mic and the main PA. In concert situations, the system can be extended with a mobile iLive T-80 Surface and iDR-32 MixRack. The system can also be controlled discreetly via the iLive MixPad iPad app or with a laptop running iLive Editor software. For the largest projects, the iDR-32 and iDR10 can be connected to operate as a single dual-rack system controlled by the T-80 Surface. Pastor Csongor Széles expressed his satisfaction with the solution provided by AudMax: “The new audio system is amazing; the automation behind the big green button and the invisibility of the mixing system is astonishing!”

The First SurfaceMountable LED with Oval Light-Radiating Characteristics By Osram

78

Displix Oval from Osram Opto Semiconductors sets new standards in LEDs for outdoor displays

result, the images displayed are extremely vivid with high colour homogeneity.

Osram Opto Semiconductors has launched the first LED with oval light-radiating characteristics for largescreen video walls or digital road signs: the new surface-mountable Displix Oval. Thanks to a compact housing measuring just 2.1 mm x 2.7 mm x 1.5 mm, almost twice as many LEDs can now be mounted on a board than with ordinary radial diodes—doubling both the pixel density and the resolution of displays. As a

An additional advantage of the high density is the fact that a lower pixel brightness is now required so that the individual LEDs take a lower current. In combination with the durable housing materials, this lower output extends the lifetime of the diodes.

The Displix Oval has a black QFN (Quad Flat No Leads) housing, which additionally boosts the image quality.

It reduces reflections and increases the contrast and colour quality of the images displayed across the entire display. “Being surface mounted, SMT LEDs like the Displix Oval have very low tilt tolerances per diode. A display fitted with the new LEDs hence has a stable and very homogenous colour appearance when viewed from virtually any angle,” explained Sven Weber, responsible for the product marketing of the Displix Oval at Osram Opto Semiconductors. Both the processes and the processing of the Displix Oval are much simpler than with radial LEDs, greatly

reducing customers’ further processing costs. Being very flat, the Displix Oval requires less silicone for the potting of the boards to protect the contacts from rain and moisture. This enables customers to reduce the amount of material used, which again has a considerable impact on their outlays. The Displix Oval is available in the colours yellow, red, green and blue. Technical Data: Dimensions of Housing: 2.1 mm x 2.7 mm x 1.5 mm Brightness (at 20 mA): Red and yellow - 1 cd Green - 2.6 cd Blue - 600 mcd Beam Angle: 110° (horizontal) and 60° (vertical)
