The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. UNWTO is currently looking for a Junior Expert holder for its Ethics and Social Responsibility Programme, to assist in the coordination of different activities of the Programme. The Ethics and Social Responsibility Programme is entrusted with the promotion of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, and the related activities in the sphere of Corporate Social Responsibility, Human Rights, Accessible Tourism for All, Gender Equality and Women & Youth Empowerment, and Children’s Rights. The Programme further coordinates the activities of both the World Committee on Tourism Ethics and the World Tourism Network on Child Protection. Under the overall supervision of the Programme Manager, Ethics and Social Responsibility, the service contract holder is expected to assist in the implementation of different activities of the Programme, especially those related to the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism and the Framework Convention on Ethics in Tourism. The main tasks include: 1. Coordinate the organization of the meetings of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics and draft work documents; 2. Coordinate activities of the Working Group of the UNWTO Draft Framework Convention on Ethics in Tourism and follow-up on actions on the Convention’s implementation: Organize meetings and technical documentation for the 22nd UNWTO General Assembly, collaborate closely with the Legal Counsel in the Convention’s implementation (upon signature, ratification, acceptance, approval or accession by State Parties) to be monitored by the Ethics Committee; 3. Coordinate actions related to the Private Sector Commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism: act as a focal point for potential signatories and guide them in both the signing and implementation duties. Prepare relevant documentation for the signing ceremonies, update the website with the information regarding the signatories, follow-up on the Commitment survey and draft summary reports for consideration of the Ethics Committee; 4. Coordinate the preparation of the call for nominations for the UNWTO Ethics Award and the preparation of the documentation on received applications; 5. Draft technical documents, project proposals, publications, minutes and reports of internal and international meetings, briefing points and speeches related to Corporate Social Responsibility; 6. Prepare and participate in meetings with stakeholders and partners of the ESDT Programme, especially in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility and Gender Equality and Women & Youth Empowerment; 7. Conduct Web search of relevant information, conferences, academic journals and studies related to social dimensions of tourism; 8. Perform other duties as required.

2 QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the field of international relations, international law, political science or a related field; an advanced university degree in another discipline or specific professional certification may be accepted in lieu if it is pertinent to the requirements of the post and in combination with relevant professional experience.

Experience and basic competencies

Minimum of four years of progressively responsible professional experience in technical work, preferably in the field of implementation of codes of conduct and international charters, management of development projects and technical committees and organization of international events.

Languages

  

Fluency in oral and written English and French; Working knowledge of Spanish would be an asset; Good working knowledge of another of the official languages of the Organization (Arabic, or Russian) would be an asset.

Computer Skills



Advanced computer literacy in Microsoft Office software and Windows 7, particularly in preparing and managing Excel files; Knowledge of online surveys and organizational tools; Familiarity in managing and maintaining databases; Basic content management system (CMS) skills.

Knowledge of policies, structures and procedures of international organizations and national administrations; Knowledge of international treaties and conventions; Analytical, creative and organizational skills; Strong oral and written communications skills in the languages required; Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural, multiethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity; Demonstrated ability to work independently within assigned areas, showing initiative and Judgment; Sense of responsibility and commitment; Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Remuneration and Other conditions

The monthly remuneration of the selected candidate would be EUR 2,000, depending on previous professional experience, skills and competencies. The Service Contract holder will be affiliated to the UNWTO health insurance plan (co-shared scheme in conformity with the Organization’s procedures).

Candidates who do not receive any feedback within three months of the deadline should consider their application as unsuccessful; Short-listed candidates may be asked to take a competitive exam as part of the final phase of the selection process. These candidates will be contacted directly for this purpose; There is no guarantee either that the initial contract will be renewed or that a career appointment within UNWTO will subsequently be offered.
