WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016 World Youth Day is taking place in Krakow, Poland, from 25 - 31 July, and we have two representatives there flying the flag for Cardiff and our 3 Churches – Mark Aziz and Allan Mathew! www.rcadc.org/world-youth-day-blog/ WYD events have been celebrated for three decades. In 1986, Pope St John Paul II began the tradition in St Peter’s Square, Rome, with a global youth celebration to which the entire Church was invited. Now, three decades later, Pope Francis will open the 21st gathering of what has become a worldwide youth phenomenon - the opportunity for a million plus Catholics to celebrate their faith with the Holy Father. Mark and Allan will tell us about their experience when they come back! Meanwhile here is the official World Youth Day Prayer… “God, merciful Father, in your Son, Jesus Christ, you have revealed your love and poured it out upon us in the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. We entrust to you today the destiny of the world and of every man and woman. We entrust to you in a special way young people of every language, people and nation: guide and protect them as they walk the complex paths of the world today and give them the grace to reap abundant fruits from their experience of the Krakow World Youth Day. Heavenly Father, grant that we may bear witness to your mercy. Teach us how to convey the faith to those in doubt, hope to those who are discouraged, love to those who feel indifferent, forgiveness to those who have done wrong and joy to those who are unhappy. Allow the spark of merciful love that you have enkindled within us become a fire that can transform hearts and renew the face of the earth. Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us. Saint John Paul II, pray for us.” Fr Matthew ~~~~ 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Sunday 31 July 2016) ~~~~ Response to Psalm O Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, Alleluia! Your word is truth, O Lord, consecrate us in the truth. Alleluia! 1st Reading: Ecclesiastes 1: 2:21-23 2nd Reading: Colossians 3: 1-5. 9-11 Gospel: Luke 12: 13-21

~~~~ 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Sunday 7 August 2016) ~~~~ Response to Psalm Happy are the people the Lord has chosen as his own. Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, Alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, For revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children. Alleluia! 1st Reading: Wisdom 18: 6-9 2nd Reading: Hebrews 11: 1-2. 8-19 Gospel: Luke 12: 32-48 St. Brigid’s and Christ the King are parishes of the Archdiocese of Cardiff. 3 Churches “LIKE THE FATHER” – THE WORKS OF MERCY We continue our series of features on the Works of Mercy, written by members of our 3 Churches Evangelization Group. 3. Shelter the Homeless ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me’ Matthew 25:35 Sometimes we find this the most challenging of the Works of Mercy, because it is not possible to walk through a large town or city like Cardiff without seeing homeless people asking for help. We can feel it is all too much of a challenge for us, we aren’t ready to open our homes, use our spare bedrooms or sofas, so how can we respond to this call? The Cardiff charity Huggard has a 20 bed hostel with additional emergency spaces, just off Dumballs Road. They also provide 14 shared houses with tenant support that accommodate 53 otherwise homeless people. Huggard open their day centre at night in extreme weather to provide shelter for people who would otherwise be forced to sleep rough. Huggard always welcome volunteers, donors and fund-raisers http://www.huggard.org.uk/how-you-can -help Why not consider doing your bit? Llamau http://www.llamau.org.uk is another Cardiff based charity working specifically with younger people who are homeless. Many of us already support groups like Rainbow of Hope in fulfilling the first of the Corporal Works of Mercy, feeding the hungry, many of whom are also homeless. Today we are reminded that we should also look to resolve the causes, not just the symptoms of homelessness. Father’s News R.I.P. Please pray for the repose of the souls of Madeline Gannon and Betti Mason, who have died recently. Their Requiem Masses take place on Monday 8th August 12 noon at Christ the King and Tuesday 9th August 10.30 at St Paul’s respectively. We remember their families in our prayers. Eternal rest grant to them, Lord. Please remember the deceased members of the 3 churches whose anniversaries occur in August including: Robert Winchester, Jack Crowshaw, Anthony Watson, Pat Rayson, Peter Cousins, Judy Castro, Betty Murphy, Pamela Morley, Matthew Jones and Beatrice Adoh.
