What is File Defense? File Defense is a database application that is capable of sending automated mails and messages to a filehoster’s abuse department via web form. Despite the spectacular closure of companies like Megauplad the number of file hosters is increasing, attesting an enormous market. What can File Defense do? File Defense collates and dispatches mails [e-mails] with links to the relevant file hosters. The application then verifies the links in regular intervals. If the links are active the system will continue sending mails and messages until the links are deleted. File Defense also completes web forms for registering abuse. In this case the links are also verified. The same procedure applies to recurring illegal links.
How does File Defense access the links? A team of experts monitors the most important online forums. As registered users they also have access to hidden links. Our staff monitor entire threads as new links are often published in existing postings. To gain access to the links our staff can even penetrate closed systems to record network card activities. Even crypted links are no problem. What information does File Defense require from customers? File Defense requires an agreement and a valid E-mail address. Ideally, this would be using the customer’s domain, e.g.,
[email protected] . File Defense does not dispatch the E-mail on behalf of the customer. Customers can also use our own mail address like
[email protected]. The system is set up so that the Company’s CEO or the legal department are clearly seen as the author of the E-mail. This gives the abuse letter greater weight.
What can’t File Defense do? File Defense does not check whether the links direct the user to the products described in the link. An uploader that posts fake links of this kind would quickly incur the wrath of the community. As uploaders are often benefiting from a filehoster’s incentive programme, they are very keen to have links that actually direct the user to the products they describe. What kinds of reports does File Defense offer? The system can handle any kind of report. Activity can be logged as an Excel file. Customers can organise these according to their specific needs: by title, time frame, file hoster, time between detection and deletion of the links, etc. Upon request the reports can be sent daily, weekly or monthly to the customer by E-mail. We log all activities. The customer may also receive blind copies of the E-mails or even complete link lists. How much does File Defense cost? We charge for the number of links we delete. Our system is set up to contain costs. The customer can set a certain amount per day/week/month and we will detect and delete links until that amount has been reached. We can also provide our services on a time-limited basis. This is particularly useful for the period immediately after a product is released. What else does File Defense have to offer? While we are looking for links we also screen the uploaders. They often leave tracks behind in the Internet which allow us to determine the exact name and address or which are sufficient to file a criminal complaint against the uploader. The uploader can be forced to pay damages. Detecting and convicting these kinds of uploaders represents a viable way of refinancing our services.
