What is ...the Western Heritage Museum? This project was driven by the need to relocate historical artifacts removed from the old Apache Powder facility, and to provide a suitable place where they can be displayed to intrigue and inform residents for generations to come. Apache Powder (now Apache Nitrogen Products) has been an integral part of Southeast Arizona providing community support. Realizing that there are other components that have contributed to Benson’s role as a “Gateway to Cochise County” this project has expanded to recognize other industries that have also played a significant role in the area.
The Western Heritage Museum is an organization formed to showcase the heritage, history and culture of the SE corner of AZ. Primarily focused on Cochise County, it tells the intertwined stories of native peoples, mining + explosives, transportation, military, ranching and farming, and the movie/entertainment industries and how they influenced our region and the southwest US. A rich interactive story told in a user directed multi-media experience visitors will want to visit over and over again. The museum experience provides a unique understanding of the region from the time of the Spaniards and missionaries to modern day life. The WHM inspires guests to visit places and experience the many activities that our diverse, and exciting area has to offer. “Come and fall in love with our mountains, river, people, and climate, you might just come back for a permanent stay.”
