* Member of Friday Night Chamber Music About The Young Artist Program: The Young Artist Program (YAP) at CIM was inaugurated over twenty years ago by former CIM President David Cerone, to celebrate and support highly gifted musicians ages 12-18, in pursuit of a career in classical music. YAP students are encouraged and inspired by a team of renowned faculty to develop into extraordinary performers, arts leaders, and compassionate global citizens. This prestigious program has played a formative role in the careers of such internationally celebrated performers as Alisa Weilerstein (cello), international soloist and winner of Avery Fisher Career Grant; Frank Huang(violin), concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic; Jinjoo Cho (violin ), CIM faculty and winner of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis; Soovin Kim, (violin) NEC faculty, and winner of The Paganini International Competition; as well as, internationally acclaimed solo and collaborative artists, Orion Weiss, (piano) and Chad Hoopes (violin). Students in the Young Artist Program are encouraged to perform as often as possible, and to discover their own process of formulating and communicating musical ideas. An emphasis is placed on healthy critique and analytic thought, combined with a passionate and creative approach to music as form of transformative self-expression. Students in YAP also have the opportunity to perform regularly at Judson Park and Judson Manor Senior Living Centers as well as The Cleveland Museum of Art. 2017-2018 Biographies Phoenix Avalon Phoenix Avalon, age 16, is passionate about his study of the violin. He is a scholarship student at the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Artist Program with Jaime Laredo and Jan Sloman, as well as studying with Itzhak Perlman, Catherine Cho and Li Lin at the Perlman Music Program. Phoenix plays with the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra and is coached in chamber music by the Cavani Quartet. Phoenix’s solo performances include the national radio shows Performance Today and From the Top, the Cleveland POPS Orchestra, the Boulder Symphony, the Arapahoe Philharmonic, the New Mexico Philharmonic, and Performance Santa Fe orchestras. In September 2017 Phoenix was a speaker and performer at TEDx ABQ and, in 2018, will solo with the Boulder Symphony for the 6th time and play in recital with the Taos Chamber Music Group. Always interested to be of service to his community, Phoenix has played for numerous fundraisers and outreach programs, and has developed and toured an interactive presentation of classical music history for school children as part of From the Top’s Leadership Training. Phoenix is grateful to be playing on a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin, c. 1850, generously loaned by Kenneth Warren and Son Ltd. of Chicago and, addition to violin, enjoys philosophy, history and cooking.

Annika Bowers Annika Bowers, 19, began her violin studies at the age of 12 with Violet Pan and currently studies with Jinjoo Cho at the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Artist Program. Her past teachers also include Hye-Jin Kim and Wei-Wei Le. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Annika held the positions of Principal Second, Assistant Concertmaster, Associate Concertmaster, and Concertmaster of the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO) over the course of four seasons. As a member of the CSYO, she participated in an official cultural exchange between Charlotte and its sister city, Limoges, France where she played in the Concert des Cités Unies Festival Orchestra. Annika attended the Cités Unies Festival in both 2011 and 2013; playing with musicians from France, Germany, Japan, Belarus, and the Czech Republic. She currently participates in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra under the leadership of Vinay Parameswaran. In 2014, she won grand prize in the Junior National Scottish Fiddling Championship with additional medals for Best Air, Best Reel, and Best Set. Annika continues Scottish Fiddling on the side, occasionally studying with Jamie Laval, previous U.S. National Scottish Fiddling Champion and acclaimed international performer. She has attended summer programs such as Indiana University Summer String Academy (2014), Heartland Chamber Music Festival (2015), and ENCORE Chamber Music Festival (2016, 2017) where she was coached by members of the Pacifica, Miami, and Cavani String Quartets respectively. In addition to violin, Annika also enjoys cooking and tutoring others in research based literature writing

Hana Chang Hana Chang, age 15, began playing the violin at the age of 4 and currently studies with Ivan Ženatý at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the Junior Young Artist Program. She gave her first solo performance at the age of 7, and has recently performed as a soloist with the Prague Radio Symphony, Utah Symphony, Hunan Symphony, and the National Theater Orchestra of Prague. She has been awarded prizes in several competitions including first prize in the NEC prep concerto competition and the Stradivarius International Violin Competition, second prize in the International Louis Spohr Competition and the Beethoven Hradec Competition, and third prize and special recognition of the jury in the Prague Spring Violin Competition. Hana has performed in multiple festivals including the Deer Valley Music Festival in Utah, and the Young Prague International Music Festival in the Czech Republic. She has also performed on the NPR radio show, From the Top, at Carnegie Hall with host, Christopher O’Riley. During past summers, she has attended the Meadowmount School of Music with Ivan Ženatý, the Musica Mundi Chamber Music Courses and Festival, the Kusatsu International Summer Music Academy and Festival with Saschko Gawriloff, The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival with Ana Chumachenco, and the Mozarteum International Summer Academy with Igor Ozim. Hana has also played in masterclasses for James Ehnes Zakhar Bron, Peter Salaff, as well as members of the Cavani String Quartet. She currently plays on a 1647 Amati violin, kindly on loan from the Rin Collection in Singapore Katarina Davies Katarina Davies, cello, age 15, was born in the USA, but moved to London, England at an early age. She began playing the cello and piano when she was 7, and started studying the cello at the age of 9 under Robert Max at the Royal Academy of Music. She has performed in masterclasses with Natalie Clein, Leonid Gorokhov, David and Philip Ying, Alina Ibragimova, Sharon Robinson, Richard Harwood and members of The Cavani String Quartet. Katarina has played with numerous orchestras in the UK, was selected to play in an octet with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Great Britain and also was the Student Ambassador for the London Chamber Orchestra, 2013-2016. In addition to numerous solo recitals, she has also performed as a soloist with The Marryat and Nonesuch Orchestras. In 2016 the Royal Academy awarded Katarina with runner up in their Lower Strings Prize and a commendation in Composition. She moved in the summer of 2016 to Cleveland and now studies under Richard Weiss of the Cleveland Orchestra in the Junior Young Artist Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music and is a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. She also takes piano lessons with Gerardo Teissonniére and studied the oboe for three years under Phil Harmer and Jack Cozen Harel. This past summer she attended the Green Mountain Music Festival and was taught under Alan Rafferty and Sarah Kim; she also returned to England for the MusicWorks chamber music course where she was coached by members of the London Hadyn Quartet and her former teacher, Robert Max. Katarina plays on a Lockey Hill cello, circa 1780.

Athena Deng Athena Deng, 14, commenced her piano studies at age 4 and is honored to be a part of the Cleveland Institute of Music Junior Young Artists program, where she currently studies with Daniel Shapiro. Her previous teachers include Lorraine Ambrose, Kenneth Broadway & Ralph Markham, and Sasha Starcevich. Athena made her orchestral debut at age 11, playing Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.3 in C major with the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra after winning the Burnaby Clef Concerto Competition. Since then, she has performed with the Richmond Orchestra, the VMO at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, the Virginia Waring Festival Orchestra in Palm Desert, California. In May of 2016, Athena was featured piano soloist by Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra to play the Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4 in G major in the Season Finale Concert. Athena has been awarded numerous top prizes in many local, national and international competitions and festivals including the first place in the 2017 Canadian Music Competition, the first prize in the 2016 BC Performing Arts, the 2016 Tom Lee Most Outstanding Pianist of the Kiwanis Music Festival, the winner of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in Palm Desert, US in 2015, the Gala Grand Prize in the 2014 Richmond Music Festival, and the first place in the 2013 Hong Kong International Piano Open Competition. In spare time, Athena enjoys drawing, writing and playing violin/piano duos with her younger sister Corina. The two girls have shared their music in many societies and benefit concerts. Athena is now a freshman at Shaker Heights High School, Cleveland. James Hettinga James Hettinga, age 18, has been studying cello since the age of 4. James is inspired by his seven siblings and takes great joy in performing with his family of string players, whenever possible. James has won numerous competitions including the Cleveland Cello Society Scholarship Competition both Junior and Senior divisions, and the Duquesne Young Artist National Competition Solo Strings Division. He has served as Principal cello of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and as a winner of The COYO Concerto competition, performed the Elgar Cello Concerto, in Severance Hall this past January. He has performed on the acclaimed NPR program From the Top as a member of the Cecilia Octet. James has performed in master classes for Sharon Robinson, Jean -Michel Fonteneau, Peter Salaff, as well as members of the Cavani and Ying String

Wenlan Jackson Wenlan Jackson, age 15, has performed on both European and American stages. She commenced her violin studies with Amy Wulfman at the age of six. After three years, she was accepted as a young artist in residence at Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in 2011, studying with Augustin Dumay and Tatiana Samouil. During this period, Wenlan was given the honor to perform for H.M. Queen Paola on Valentine’s Day 2012, and was featured in a Belgian TV interview. She also participated in numerous events and festivals, including Fête de la Musique (Waterloo), European Informal Summit (Ghent), and Rencontres Musicales Internationales des Graves (Bordeaux). Since 2014, Wenlan has been studying with Mr. Ivan Zenaty at Cleveland Institute of Music during the school year and Meadowmount School of Music in the summer. Wenlan also studies piano with Dr. Sean Schulze and chamber music with Annie Fullard. She has participated in masterclasses with Peter Salaff, Ilya Kaler, Jeffrey Irvine and Kevork Mardirossian. In June 2016, she was featured on NPR’s radio show From The Top, performing Mendelssohn’s Octet as a member of the Cecilia Octet. Later that year, Wenlan performed the first movement of Sibelius Violin Concerto as a Concerto Competition recipient of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. Currently, Wenlan is a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, and attends Shaker Heights High School where she is Concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra. Audrey Konopka Audrey Konopka, age 16, is resident of Pepper Pike, Ohio, and in 11th grade. She currently studies piano with Dr. Sean Schulze at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has performed in numerous recitals, master classes, and chamber music concerts in Cleveland, Akron, West Palm Beach, and at the Wirth Piano Festival in St Paul MN (2015, 2016). She placed 2nd in the 2014 OMTA Competition and placed 2nd in the 2015 Midwest Regional MTNA Competition. As a composer she won 1st place in the Akron Children's Society Composition Competition (2009, 2011, 2013), and was a finalist in the 2011 Morton Gould ASCAP Composition Competition. Audrey performed her own composition as piano soloist with the Akron Symphony Orchestra in five children's concerts. In 2009 her works were performed by the Stringendo Festival Orchestra (West Palm Beach FL). She loves acting, drawing, singing, and tennis.

Hannah Lindvall, Hannah Lindvall, age 17, studies violin with Ivan Zenaty in the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Artists Program. She is coached in chamber music by members of the Cavani Quartet and participates in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. Originally from the Orlando area, Hannah was Associate Concertmaster of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra (FSYO). She previously held the positions of Assistant Concertmaster, Principal Second, and Assistant Principal Second as well as concertmaster of all of the preparatory orchestras. Hannah soloed with FSYO twice as a concerto competition winner. She also enjoys subbing in the professional symphony, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra (OPO). In Florida, Hannah studied with the concertmaster of OPO, Rimma Bergeron-Langlois. Hannah attended the Brevard Music Festival for two summers before discovering the Meadowmount School of Music, where she studied the past two summers. In her free time, Hannah enjoys writing music and singing. She participated in the All State Sight Reading Chorus in 2014 and 2015 and was accepted to the NAFME All National Chorus in 2015 and 2016. In August of 2017, Hannah was a featured soloist with the Orquestra Camerata de Sesi in their “Rockestra” concert series. Singing and playing violin, she performed both rock classics and original music for three shows in Vitoria, Espiritu Santo, Brazil.

Claire Peyrebrune Claire Peyrebrune, 18, is a student of Jeffrey Irvine in the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Artist Program. She began her musical studies at the age of 4 through the Cleveland Institute of Music Sato Center for Suzuki studies. Former teachers include Peter Slowik and Laura Shuster. Claire has been a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra since 2013. She began playing chamber music at age 10 in the CIM Preparatory Chamber Music Program where she has been coached by members of the Cavani Quartet, Peter Salaff, and other CIM faculty members. Claire also was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Advanced Performance Seminar for two years, in which she played in quartets with members of The Cleveland Orchestra. She attended Credo Chamber Music for four summers, where she used her musical skills to give back to the community by playing concerts in the coffee shops, hospitals, and nursing homes, as well as doing other types of services, such as volunteering at the food bank and building a playground for disabled children. This past summer, she attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival. In 2016, Claire performed on the NPR radio show From The Top as a member of the Cecilia Octet. Claire has placed 2nd five times in the Ohio Viola Society Young Artist Competition. She is grateful to Mr Irvine and all her other teachers and mentors for their guidance.

Mikel Rollet, Mikel Rollet, age 16, is a native Floridian, and began his violin studies at the age of six and viola at the age of twelve. He is an alumnus of Bak Middle School of the Arts and Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach. Mikel is now currently a junior at Montessori High School at University Circle and is a member of the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Artists Program. He was co-principal violist of the Florida Youth Orchestra, and has held principal positions in the Dreyfoos Philharmonic, Florida’s AllState Orchestras, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Young Artists Orchestra at Tanglewood, and most recently the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. He has participated in Philadelphia International Music Festival from 2012 to 2015, Interlochen in 2013, 2014, and 2016 (under full merit scholarship), and Boston University Tanglewood Institute in 2015 and 2017. He won the Maestro Award during the 2014 World Strides Heritage Performance Series in Boston, the Junior Award for Outstanding Violists and two Irene Muir nominations in the Florida Federation of Music Clubs in Jacksonville, Florida. Mikel currently studies with Jeffrey Irvine and Kerry Ryan, the assistant principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has previously studied with Huifang Chen, Kimberly Fischer, and Laura Sinclair. He has also participated in lessons and master classes with Peter Zazofsky, Choong-Jin Chang, Steven Ansell, Wesley Collins, Michelle LaCourse, Leonard Schranze, and Michael Ouzounian as well as members of the Cavani String Quartet. Samuel Rosenthal Sam Rosenthal, viola, age 17, is honored to be part of the Young Artist Program at The Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studies with Jeffrey Irvine. He has been studying viola, violin, and chamber music at CIM since 2007. As a participant in The Chamber Music Connection, Columbus, Ohio and Phoenixphest in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he has performed in master classes for members of The St. Lawrence, Ying and Cavani String Quartets, as well as distinguished artists Sharon Laredo Robinson, James Ehnes, Paul Kantor and Peter Salaff. His musical summers have included Greenwood Music Camp, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and the renowned Perlman Music Program on Shelter Island, NY, where he will return this summer. Sam is looking forward to participating in the Perlman Music Program Suncoast in Sarasota, Florida and traveling to Tel Aviv, Israel this spring with The Perlman Program. Sam has been a member of The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra since 2016 and has served as principal viola. He is a senior at Shaker Heights High School, where he is principal viola of the Chamber Orchestra. Sam is proud to be President of CODA, a student led musical community outreach organization at Shaker Heights High School. Sam has performed on the NPR Program From The Top as a member of The Cecilia Octet. In January 2018, he will be performing as a soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra as a winner of their annual Concerto Competition; Sam was a featured soloist with The Suburban Symphony in March of 2017. Sam would like to thank to all of his wonderful teachers and coaches, including Kimberly Meier-Sims, Jeffrey Irvine, Carol Rodland and Kirsten Docter, as well as special thanks to his grandparents for all of their support.
