THE ARTS

Young Performers Shine Over 70 students received lessons in piano, violin, cello, saxophone, recorder, drum kit and guitar in 2015. Many of these learners recently performed at an afternoon music soirée. The Grade 2 and Grade 3 learners joined the audience so they could learn more about the musical sounds of the various instruments, and learn concert etiquette.

"When I play the piano I go into my own world, and my fingers can do anything." GARON BEUKES, 5M

From the celebratory soirée, a few top performers were selected to perform in

the musical Showcase Concert with the choirs and some dancers. The eight music learners who formed the "orchestra" this year were also entered for external violin exams with UNISA and ABRSM, ranging from Pre-grade 1 to Grade 3, a very high standard at primary school level. The students set forth to the external exam venue with great excitement, and played with great enthusiasm. The school is now awaiting the release of their results later this year.

FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY SCHOOL

Carpe Diem We are very privileged to be in a school environment that offers a great education, qualified educators and supportive parents and learners who want to achieve and make the most of education offered within our community. There are many young people who are expected to pass their examinations under very difficult circumstances and achieve good results without the privilege of learning in an environment that offers so many opportunities.

Some amazing individuals have managed to overcome personal obstacles to achieve greatness. William Kamkwamba became a Malawian inventor, engineer and author. He gained fame in his country when he built a windmill to power a few electrical appliances in his family’s house using Bluegum trees, bicycle parts and materials collected in a scrap yard. Since then he has built a solar-powered water pump that supplies drinking water to his village plus two other windmills.

In spite of the difficulties that so many people have to face, there will always be heroes like William who beat the odds. You must seize the day (carpe diem, in Latin). I have no doubt that you can also achieve great success if you make the most of the opportunities in front of you.
