What this document is

This study, published in the E-International Scientific Research Journal in 2011, measured the glycemic index of ten fruits commonly eaten in India, using an alternate calculation approach rather than the standard method of testing blood sugar response directly in human volunteers over several hours.

The research team was led by M. Premanath, a senior consultant in internal medicine and diabetes based in Mysore, working with colleagues including H. Basavana Gowdappa, M. Mahesh and M. Suresh Babu from JSS Medical College. Their stated motivation was that many people with diabetes avoid fruit altogether on the assumption that any sweet-tasting food will sharply raise blood sugar, even though fruit is generally considered a valuable part of a healthy diet, including for people managing diabetes.

By working out glycemic index values for fruits that had not previously been well characterized in Indian dietary research, the study aimed to give clinicians and dietitians a more specific, evidence-based basis for fruit recommendations to diabetic patients, rather than relying on blanket advice to limit fruit intake regardless of which fruit is involved.
