What this document is
NHS Estates was the agency within the English health service responsible for guidance on hospital buildings, design and facilities management before its functions were later absorbed into other parts of the Department of Health. This annual report, covering the 2004-05 financial year, was formally presented to Parliament and ordered to be printed by the House of Commons, as was standard practice for the annual reports of executive agencies at the time.
The 60-page report set out NHS Estates' activities over the year, a period in which the agency was producing guidance documents such as Health Building Notes and Health Technical Memoranda that NHS trusts used when designing, building or refurbishing hospital facilities.
NHS Estates was subsequently wound up as a separate agency, and its estates and facilities guidance functions moved into NHS England, which now maintains the complete list of publications related to NHS estates, including notes on which older documents remain current and which have been withdrawn or superseded.
