What this document is

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) publishes route maps for its New York City bus network, broken out by borough: separate maps cover the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, with Queens and Staten Island each split further into local and express services. The maps show which routes serve which streets and how routes connect to the subway system, and they are one of the basic navigation tools the MTA makes available to bus riders alongside its trip planner and real-time arrival data.

Bus maps of this kind are revised whenever the MTA adds, removes or reroutes service, which happens more often than subway map changes given the comparative ease of altering a bus route. A downloaded or printed copy from an earlier date can show service that no longer runs, particularly after one of the borough-wide bus network redesigns the MTA has carried out in stages across the city.

Current bus maps for all five boroughs, along with the accompanying borough service guides, are published on the MTA's own maps page.
