What this document is

This short reference document, originally produced under UNEP's former Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE), set out headline figures on how much the buildings and construction sector contributes to global energy use, material extraction and greenhouse gas emissions, aimed at policymakers and industry audiences who needed the numbers without reading a full technical report.

The figures it summarized have since been folded into UNEP's ongoing work on buildings, now run through the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction. Current UNEP figures put the sector at roughly 37 percent of energy- and process-related CO2 emissions and close to half of global material extraction, while employing around 9 percent of the world's workforce across construction, renovation, demolition and engineering.

UNEP's DTIE division no longer exists under that name; its buildings work is now published through UNEP's Cities and buildings and construction pages, which are updated as new global status reports are released rather than through a single static fact sheet.
