MÁXIMA MEDICAL CENTER

Dutch health-care provider leads the way toward personalized patient care STORAGE ADMINS GAIN MORE TIME FOR CLINICAL PROJECTS With advancements in medical technologies, genomics, and innovative treatment therapies, health care is rapidly moving toward truly personalized care. In the Netherlands, Máxima Medical Center (MMC) is setting the pace with a patient-centric approach that takes each patient’s unique needs into account. To put its philosophy into action, MMC stores various medical datasets, patient

records, and diagnostic images on different storage solutions to provide clinicians with the most efficient and fastest method for accessing data needed to treat patients. One challenge was that MMC's three storage engineers each delivered services in their own way, resulting in inconsistent quality of service to users. Manual processes also meant

systems across two locations. EMC VPLEX® Metro storage virtualization provides continuous operations between the two active-active data centers. This software-defined storage infrastructure supports VMware virtual machines and Microsoft Windows servers running ChipSoft electronic medical records (EMRs), Philips MRI picture archiving and communication system (PACS), Agfa and VISUS radiology PACS, and Philips Patient Data Management Systems (PDMS). With in-depth visibility into software-defined storage, ViPR SRM provides analysis of configurations, reporting on consumption for chargeback, and monitoring of utilization and growth for effective storage capacity planning.

CONSISTENTLY HIGH QUALITY OF SERVICE With ViPR Controller and ViPR SRM managing all storage in its software-defined infrastructure, MMC can consistently deliver a high standard of service quality across the medical center. For example, ViPR Controller enables administrators to automatically discover storage regardless of environment or location. They then apply standardized rules for automated provisioning, greatly improving responsiveness to clinical and business users. Rob Aerts, MMC’s information and communications technology chief, remarks, “We used to have only manual processes, which took about four hours to deliver storage. Now, ViPR Controller manages everything automatically—switches, storage, VPLEX, applications—and we fulfill a storage request in five minutes.”

REAL-TIME REPORTING ENABLES CHARGEBACK ViPR SRM also replaced manual processes for storage analysis and reporting. Before, users weren’t aware of how much storage they used, and IT was bombarded with questions from management about storage utilization and growth projections. It typically took weeks to provide answers. Now ViPR SRM automates reporting, enabling IT to respond in near real time. “ViPR SRM lets us provide users with better insight on how much storage they’re using,” says Aerts. “We also can produce a detailed cost breakdown for chargeback or showback so our internal customers can see exactly what they are paying for.”

Aerts continues, “With ViPR SRM, we can visualize and analyze storage configurations to better manage utilization. Previously, we’d run into a problem and just purchase more storage. Now we can project our storage requirements more accurately, and invest at the right time to meet our clinical and business needs.”

ENGINEERS DO MORE IN LESS TIME Managing growth is essential considering that every year MMC adds another 20 terabytes of clinical data and PACS images to its infrastructure, most of which must be retained for 15 years to meet compliance requirements. Using ViPR Controller and ViPR SRM with Isilon provides MMC with the scalability and control to handle this growth with ease. “With ViPR Controller and ViPR SRM managing Isilon, we can assure clinicians that vital files and images are properly stored and accessible when needed,” notes Aerts. “Growth is no problem. Isilon scales easily, and with ViPR solutions, our engineers can handle more work in less time.” In fact, MMC’s storage engineers have reclaimed so much time, they are moving into new roles. Aerts explains, “We’re seeing our storage engineers transform from technical specialists to business consultants.”

This involves collaborating across departments and with specialists from around the Netherlands to create treatment options that address every person’s individual health-care needs.
