The World’s 50 Best Restaurants appoints new Academy Chair for Mexico and Central America Valentina Ortiz Monasterio is named as the new head of the voting academy for the region of Mexico and Central America for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants. Ortiz Monasterio, who is based in Mexico City, has been involved in the culinary world since studying at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris in 2000. A law graduate, she has worked as a public affairs consultant for 17 years. In 2013, she founded online food site animalgourmet.com and recently co-created a wine business in Baja California. A regular guest journalist in various media outlets, she is currently a postgraduate student at UC Davis in California on the winemaking program. As Academy Chair for Mexico and Central America, Ortiz Monasterio will oversee the voting panels for both Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants (63 voters) and The World’s 50 Best Restaurants (40 voters), beginning with the 2017 edition of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, which takes place in Colombia later this year. William Drew, Group Editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, says: “We are delighted that Valentina is joining the 50 Best family to oversee this influential and successful culinary region as we approach the 5th edition of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2017 in Bogotá, as well as the 2018 edition of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants in Bilbao, Spain.” Ortiz Monasterio takes over from Pablo Baños, who retires from the position after seven successful years, which included Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants taking place in Mexico City in 2015 and 2016. The 50 Best team would like to thank Pablo Baños for his immense contribution to the success of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants and The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. The voting region of Mexico and Central America comprises the following countries: Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

The Academy system In order to ensure the fair representation of the global restaurant scene, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants divides the world into 26 geographical regions. Four of these regions are located with Latin America, and they form the structural basis of the voting for Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants. Each region has an Academy Chair appointed for their knowledge of their part of the restaurant world, their independence and their contacts across the gastronomic sector. These chairs

each select the voting panel (40 voters for The World’s 50 Best; 63 voters for Latin America’s 50 Best), ensuring a balanced selection of chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, restaurant critics and welltravelled gourmets. These voters respectively make up The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy and Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, which are voted for separately. Regular rotation of Academy Chairs helps ensure the make-up of the Academy remains fresh. The voting processes and results for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants are subject to independent adjudication by world-renowned professional services consultancy Deloitte.
