The Ability Center Annual Report

2016

How does The Ability Center measure up? Welcome. This 2016 Annual Report represents the hard work and commitment of board members, staff, volunteers, community stakeholders, and financial supporters. Collectively they support our mission to assist people with disabilities to live, work, and socialize within a fully accessible community. Two years ago, we started a journey to go beyond anecdotal success stories to really understanding what determines our success. The Ability Center’s program evaluation system emphasizes measurement of individual outcomes, consumer satisfaction, quality of life, and financial efficiency (return on investment). The system was designed in consultation with Sheri Chaney Jones, founder of Measurement Resources Company. Ms. Jones is a leader in the field of performance and outcomes management. She is the author of Impact & Excellence: Data-driven Strategies for Aligning Mission, Culture and Performance in Nonprofit and Government Organizations (Jossey-Bass, 2014). Today, The Ability Center is focused on measuring: - How many consumers have successfully completed their program goals and or have had improvements in their lives - Cost efficiencies - Number of consumers who report being more independent since receiving services from The Ability Center - How many consumers perceive The Ability Center is delivering high-quality services and is meeting their needs - Percentage of community members who are aware of The Ability Center programs and their impact - The strength of The Ability Center’s network of partners and providers, which help increase inclusion - Number of advocacy projects where The Ability Center has positively impacted the inclusion and access of individuals with disabilities Though we use this detailed information to keep us on course year to year, the information in this report gives you the highlights of what is possible when we work together. Our partnerships with so many individuals and organizations are what allow us to help move the disability community forward in northwest Ohio. To those who support the organization with your time, talent, and treasure, I am confident we will measure up to your expectations as a premier disability service organization. Sincerely,

Tim Harrington Executive Director 2

Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for supporting The Ability Center of Greater Toledo in 2016. The commitment of program volunteers and the generosity of local businesses that donate their expertise, as well as financial contributions, resulted in The Ability Center serving more people with disabilities. The Ability Center provides an array of programs and services that assist people with disabilities in all facets of their lives. This year we built more ramps to keep individuals in their own homes, moved more people out of institutions and back into their own homes, helped more youth prepare for life after they graduate high school, and placed more service dogs with individuals as well as therapy dogs into schools. The Ability Center is recognized for its accomplishments in meeting the direct needs of individuals with disabilities in northwest Ohio. We continue to take a leadership role in advocating for people with disabilities at the state level, as well as in the national arena. Check us out on Facebook for an update of what we are doing now. We couldn’t have done all we did without your support! Thank you. Sincerely, Ability Center Board Chair 2017 Colleen J. Mandell, Ed.D. Board Chair

A Step in the Right Direction

2016 was a year of renewed focus on youth and young adults with disabilities. From the moment we began developing our newest initiative, we knew this program would be unique to our area. The Next Steps Summer Program is designed to prepare students with disabilities for college and post-secondary training. Ten students entered the program this past summer ready to increase their independence and foster leadership abilities. Community partners and a team of ACT staff created an environment full of hands-on learning facilitated on the campus of the University of Toledo. Students gained an inside look at professional employment opportunities at local job sites cultivated by The Rotary Club of Toledo’s Disability Service Committee. This program is just one component of our new Life Skills Department. After a successful pilot year of the summer program, ACT is concentrating on building momentum and expanding program capabilities. Community Connections and the Youth Transition Program have combined to deliver a comprehensive program preparing youth to enter adulthood. The purpose of the Life Skills Department is to create and support community options for people living with disabilities. Life Skills does this by assisting individuals define their vision for life and providing the tools to make it a reality. Through a mix of traditional classes and one-on-one mentorship, youth will develop skills for a smooth transition into their next phase of life. Last fiscal year brought new experiences and program improvements to The Ability Center. This year, we will double the number of participants in our Next Steps Summer Program and enhance the transition experience for countless individuals with disabilities in our community.

I am extremely grateful for my experiences through ACT’s summer program. I got the chance to meet a variety of great people with experiences both similar and different to my own. The experience has enabled me to see a variety of different perspectives and life challenges that other people face. It has shown me how much I truly have to be grateful for as far as my independence and mobility. - Brandon Moldenke, participant in the Next Steps Summer Program
